On August 16, the Town Council accepted the recommendation of the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Commission for the temporary conversion of one tennis court at Jacobs Park into pickleball courts for a period of two years. This conversion will allow the Town to address changing community programming desires in a timely and cost-effective manner while also providing operational and utilization data for long-term facility planning. The Town Council further directed that the conversion be completed with player safety in mind.

Town staff has identified a four-court conversion option that meets these objectives. Within the next 60 days, the Town will complete the conversion of the northwest court at Jacobs Park from one tennis court to four pickleball courts, complete with nets and striping. This conversion will take place during the planned resurfacing of the remaining tennis courts and selected outdoor basketball courts. Town staff and the project vendor have identified conversion options that will minimize both the cost and operational requirements for conversion back to a single tennis court configuration in the future.

With the addition of the pickleball courts, the Town’s Community Services Department will work with existing user groups, the Morongo Basin Tennis Association and residents to balance the availability of the remaining tennis courts for both organized and open tennis activities. Further, court rules and regulations for the tennis courts, ball wall and pickleball courts will be updated and posted for player and spectator use.

The Town is excited to offer this new recreational amenity that will appeal to all ages of Town residents and encourages courteous, fair and respectful play at all times.
