SUSPECT(S): Derek Smelley, 35-year-old, Male Resident of Twentynine Palms
VICTIM(S): State of California
SUMMARY: On Friday, October 28, 2022, at 7:04 P.M., deputies assigned to a bicycle and pedestrian safety operation in Twentynine Palms, which was funded by the Office of Traffic Safety, observed a bicycle traveling westbound on South Slope Drive with no lighting equipment during darkness. Deputies contacted the rider and identified him as Derek Smelley. Smelley was in possession of a concealed straight blade knife about eight inches in length, suspected methamphetamine, and suspected drug paraphernalia.
Smelley was arrested for felony possession of a dirk/dagger, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of paraphernalia. Smelley was booked into the Morongo Basin Jail.
