HVCC THIS MONDAY
• Find out what’s happening in our desert! The next meeting of the Homestead Valley Community Council will be in Landers Belfield Hall at 3:00 p.m. this Monday, May 16.
Law Enforcement and the Fire Departments are always invited, to report to you and answer your questions. We hope to hear from Chief Dan Munsey about County Fire funding.
Claudia Spotts from the Morongo Basin Historical Society will be on hand to tell us about the plans for the 30th Anniversary of the Landers Earthquake – if you were not here that day, it was definitely an earthshaking event – both historically and geologically.

DOWNHOME HOEDOWN
• Have you heard? Live music from 12:30 p.m. till your boots fall off! The Downhome Hoedown has announced live country music headliners to entertain you on Saturday, May 21, at Homestead Valley Park in Landers.
Music, vendors, food and beverages, tickets at the gate only 10.00 per person, kids 12 and under free!
Homestead Valley Park is just a hop skip and a jump from Hwy 247:
If you go on Linn Road, go about three miles, turn right at the Integratron onto Belfield Blvd.
From 247 on Reche Road, go a little over two miles, turn left onto Belfield Blvd.
Bring your own seating and enjoy a day outdoors at this first annual fundraiser for H.E.L.P. the Humanitarian Emergency Lifeline project!

OHV AREA REOPENS
• Offroaders: The Marine Corps has concluded training in the Johnson Valley Shared Use Area, so it’s now open to the public. The land has been thoroughly inspected and returned to the Bureau of Land Management for public use and recreation.
The Marine Corps thanks the community for your support.
The military training in Johnson Valley is critical for maintaining national defense through progressive service-level training.

SMOKE SPOTTER
• Smoke gets in your eyes? You probably noticed a haze in the air recently and wondered, where’s the fire? (It was controlled burns up by Summit Valley in the Hesperia area for training fire department personnel fighting wildfires.)
The BLM NewsBytes says now you can check the smoke forecast on the go!
The California Smoke Spotter mobile app will give you a comprehensive overview of the latest information on prescribed fires, projected smoke impacts, current air quality, and educational material. This helps you plan your day’s activities and also determine if smoke is from a local prescribed fire.

WINDY FIESTA
• To all our friends who traveled from far and wide last Saturday to the JV Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, thanks for coming – after the lockdowns, we imagined so many of you would be out of the habit of making the trip.
Thanks to those who have sent photos taken at the event (and if you took some, too, please e-mail to me – love to have lots of choices for the next Journal!
And thanks to our members and their volunteer helpers who served up such great food and drinks. The only disappointment: it was too windy to run the trains on the garden railway. (We’ve seen those lightweight boxcars blow off the rails and even some engines, and it ain’t pretty.)
Oh, well, it’s May. It gets windy.
