FIESTA!
• In case you missed all your earlier invites: the Johnson Valley Cinco de Mayo Fiesta is this Saturday, May 7th, at the Community Center. Admission is only 10.00 per person. This includes a free frozen margarita, your delicious dinner from the Taco Grill, plus baked treats from the Dessert Bar! If you want another margarita, it’s 3.00.
Doors open at 2:30 p.m., and you may enjoy the afternoon indoors or outdoors. The Margaritaville Bar will be set up under the shade pergola at the front entry from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. (chips and dips are available indoors if you wish, to go with your margaritas).
Your selections from the Taco Grill will be served buffet-style inside the hall between 4:00-5:30: choose from carne asada beef, pork, or chicken, plus tasty salsas, rice and beans.
The weather gurus say the afternoon will be in the seventies and breezy. Find a table on the back patio or under the pergola, or head over to the Paul Van Hook Desert Dreams Garden next to the parking area. Tables and benches can be found, or bring your own seating if you prefer.
The Garden Railway engineers plan to run two trains. (As always, they ask trainwatchers to please help keep kids and dogs out of the railroad layout. Running around or kicking dirt onto the tracks can stop and/or derail the train.)
To get to the JV Community Center, from Hwy 247, turn at the big red Johnson Valley sign onto Larrea Road (paved), and go 1-3/4 miles up to Quailbush Rd. You will see the Community Center on your left at the corner of Quailbush Rd.

- Offroaders reminder: the Johnson Valley Shared Use Area is still closed for military training through 10:00 Monday morning, May 9. The JV OHV Area to the west in the Cougar Buttes area remains open. To get there from Hwy 247 turn on Bessemer Mine Road or go farther west to Camp Rock Road. Please take it easy on Camp Rock.

CANNABIS CONTROL
- We hear from Chuck Bell at the Lucerne Valley Economic Development Association (LVEDA) that the County got some help from the State Department of Cannabis Control.
The cannabis enforcement efforts during the week of April 18th-24th resulted in a high number of warrants and follow-up inspections being completed by Code Enforcement. The team logged 48 inspections (including 27 warrants with Marijuana Eradication Team (MET)) which resulted in 38 citations issued, totaling $100k.
Fieldwork included a sweep of properties on April 20th under warrants prepared by the STATE Department of Cannabis Control (DCC), at which County Code Enforcement officers were present. This is the first time in recent memory that DCC has organized and executed warrants in our unincorporated areas for outdoor grows.
DCC staff were invaluable recently for attempting an undercover buy (at the County’s request) at a dispensary that Code Enforcement successfully shut down a few weeks ago. DCC senior staff from Sacramento were on hand to observe, and County Code Enforcement received written commendations and thanks from the local DCC team supervisor for the County Code officers’ work and assistance.
Additionally, three property abatements completed this week removed a total of 29.5 tons of trash from these sites.
The statistics are mind-blowing. We all know this infestation of illegal pot farms is bad – but it is worse than bad. 29.5 TONS of trash from three locations is horrifying.

SCHOOLS SUCCESS
- Nine districts and 57 schools throughout San Bernardino County have been recognized through the California Department of Education’s (CDE) newly implemented 2022 California Pivotal Practice (CAPP) Award Program.
We’re happy to hear that they listed the Lucerne Valley Unified School District (which includes Johnson Valley) among the nine districts that earned this recognition.
“I commend these schools and districts for their flexibility and high standards of excellence in the face of adversity,” said County Superintendent Ted Alejandre. “The awardees have demonstrated their commitment to doing whatever it takes to provide holistic support to students throughout the pandemic.”
The CAPP Program recognizes and celebrates innovative practices implemented by schools and districts despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. It honors unique strategies to support students in at least one of the four key areas: Student Engagement, Distribution of Technology, Nutrition Services and Social Emotional Well-Being of Students.
This has been a year of major achievements for LVUSD! Congrats to Superintendent of Schools Peter Livingston and the hard-working and innovative Board of Trustees!
