Funny Business In 29 Palms?

City Hall Slow to Relinquish RDA Funds | January 19, 2012 29 Palms, CA -The town of Twentynine Palms is actually not a town at all, but rather a tiny city. It is situated in a very isolated portion of the Morongo Basin desert, about 15 miles East of Joshua Tree. State Route (SR) 62 runs through the modest municipality. Just outside of downtown a lone signpost on SR 62 reads “No services for 100 miles.” It’s a rustic and proud village with a rich history dating back to...

A clue for a delusional 29 City Hall kleptocracy

Chief Administrative Officer, Los Angeles:   “The reality of the situation is the (agency) as we know it is dead,” he said. “And I think it’s time for us to take it off of the machine.” Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky:   “It was only a matter of time before redevelopment activities prompted a backlash. You had a good thing going for a long time and you got greedy.” L.A. council won’t absorb redevelopment agency By David Zahniser, Los Angeles Times (January 12, 2012) Fearing a new financial burden in...

29 Palms: Careless oversight or stealth abuse of power?

“The bucks stops at the City Manager’s desk.” TWENTYNINE PALMS, CA  – The City breached its pledge to the community to provide public access to videos of Council Meetings. A friendly call earlier this week to the City Clerk’s Office resulted in being informed that the video would be up within 48 hours. That expired Thursday. Today is Friday. The City is  dark. Dark until Tuesday, January 17. Some will believe there is a conspiracy of some sort or a stealth abuse of power somewhere up the line on...

29 Palms: A fair and unbiased Successor Committee is indispensable

The fuel of Project Phoenix is pure egotism. The City Council has literally driven the ExRDA playhouse into the ground.  As such, the City is associated with a local government of special interest, by special interest, and for special interests. Come Tuesday January 10, will the city follow the explicit mandates of California law, or will it continue head-butting the community, flagrantly mocking California law and ignoring a Supreme Court decisions by stonewalling legislation that successfully exterminated ExRDAs and redirect those funds back to schools and special taxing districts...

FEMA Alluvial Flood Zone Inundates Project Phoenix

FEMA Hydrological Studies need be conducted to assess down gradient during intense and violent flooding in the downtown 29 Palms FEMA Flood Zone. This becomes critically important since the Phoenix plans call for a playhouse buried in a massive underground basement.  Have we forgot we live in the 29 desert where intense and devastating flooding naturally occurs? Devastating floods are natural and  recurring events for Twentynine Palms that have become extreme hazardous as the town plans its encroachment on alluvial fans and floodplain, modifying the landscape and building structures...

When 29 Palms filled out their  Enforceable Obligation Payment Schedule (EOPS)  to the State and County Controller they were absolutely convinced that they had the bull by the horns and there was no way that the State Supreme court would go against the RDAs. Now that the Court ruled that RDAs are out of business for good. The City of 29 Palms is stuck with that 29 Palms Enforceable Obligation Payment Schedule. This is going to be interesting to see how they can get their “Project Phoenix” funding past the Oversight Board. It is not...

29 Palms: Sweet Victory with a Sour Aftermath

Obituary: The Gary Daigneault RDA City Playhouse Slush Fund Opinion / Commentary Rutan and Tucker has  failed the city. They have given bad advice. Can it be denied? They have left taxpayers  with an unbelievable 30 year mega-million dollar debt. They are not too big to get the boot. The City Council has created a $13-15 million debt — all the while special interest and other were pulling the strings. City Council incompetence? You bet. They, too, need to get the boot. “A fine mess you’ve gotten us into...

Refocus Twentynine: A Call To Action

For most, local politics are what we read or hear in the local news.  We might complain, but few choose to participate. And believe me, after the past few days of experiencing someone not liking my questions, I can see why you might not want to.  But in the end, all that has been accomplished this past week is a show of what happens when there is  not enough people participating  in local government.  Government at any level is still “We the People” and the attempt to use power to...

A Stygian Friday, the “Up CLose” Show

TWENTYNINE PALMS, CA  -  The KCDZ Up Close show is a weekly forum to discuss issues important to citizens of the Morongo Basin. Usually the programming is available on the Station’s Podcast Internet page. However, the podcast for Friday, December 9, 2011 its not online. This past Friday, FCC airwaves were tainted by host,  Gary Daigneault, to bad mouth a responsible, hardworking and outstanding defender of truth and justice and much respected Morongo Basin Special Education Educator, Cora Heisner. Many know Cora to be a responsible, hardworking, local citizen-...

Redux: Richard Warne Part 1: The Bio Behind The Bio

Twentynine Palms, CA– I agree with Mayor Harris’ s comment “Get it right before you write.”  So I have spent the majority of the past 5 days trying to do that.  I have spent countless hours reading through newspaper articles, city council minutes, and interviewing people from South Jordan, Utah to Grand Forks, North Dakota to Livingston, California.  I did this because I also agree with Dan and others that we (citizens of 29) were not given enough   information about the person that was chosen for us even before...
