Chalk Fest Was Not Squashed By City Council

chalk art

I was reading the October/November issue of The Sun Runner. In the article “Desert Art News” written by Barbara Buckland and Steve Brown, there are a few statements about the original Chalk Fest. “Don’t look for the Twentynine Palms Chalk Fest we told you about in the last issue’s Art News. The City Council decided against funding the festival being produced by Action Council, and the festival has been postponed. We will keep you posted…” I know this was just a quick note and not meant to slam the city council, but I wanted...

“The Little Red Engine That Could,” ChalkFest 29 Nov. 6

What does the ChalkFest 29 art event On Nov. 6 and “The Little Red Engine That Could” have in common? Chalk Art Festival is going to take place Nov. 6, 2010 without City funding of $16,000! Is this a new dawn for the City of Twentynine Palms? This is a lesson to be learned for local non-profit art group with friends at City Hall “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can…”. We all remember that wonderful children story. It was one of my favorite...

Community Radio Visited: Coffee with Gary and Branson

September 17, 2010

Thanks for dropping in Gary. I serve the best brew of coffee in the neighborhood. I think you’ll like this dark roast. It’s a rich and flavorful premium Arabica blend grown in the Central Highlands of Vietnam and Papua New Guinea. At least that’s what it says on the container. Here’s why I invited you over.  Your community radio show the other day was pure Machiavellian dirty politics. Your old crony city council hopeful Jay Corbin was on the show Friday that you hosted. He  has the not so charitable distinction...

Inept or corrupt?

Inept or corrupt?

Recent City Council meetings have caught the attention of the majority of the voters. The actions that we have seen recently seem to give credence to the long standing belief that Twentynine Palms’governing body operates like a ”good ol’ boys club” serving their own interest instead of the interest of the citizens of  Twentynine Palms. Anyone attending the August 31st city council meeting, left there believing that someone at city hall had led Mel Berlin to believe that he had financial support for the chalk fest, even before it...

Big Bully walking…

By now most people have read Mel Berlin’s email sent to 29 Palms City Manager Mike Tree. And you’ve read the other posts put up in Cactus Thorns concerning these bizarre turn of events with the City Manager, City Council and Mel Berlin. Then you know he’s back, the same guy, for more tax money. He dumped the name of Action Council 29 and his  group came up with a brand new name. In Berlin’s Sept 7 e-mail to City Manager Mike Tree, the city was notified that Action...

2010 29 City Council Speakers Forum Stonewalled?

2010 29 City Council Speakers Forum Stonewalled?

This Candidates Speakers forum is going to happen. It will happen with or without the use of a city building. It seem word may have come down from city hall to make things difficult for candidates, the community and the alternative news sources in the valley. This decision flies in the face of the full Council per its Aug. 31 Meeting. My understanding was that the full Council was going to consider wavier of fees for use of a city building. Readers may be aware that a syndicate of...

“It is time for the city to take itself back from the crazy’s…”quote Mel Berlin

Mel, even though you are acting like a spoiled child that didn’t get everything you wanted for Christmas, you have provided a service to the city of Twentynine Palms.  I think your disdain for the citizens of Twentynine Palms comes through loud and clear, from your  actions at the city council meeting and your post online.  Do you not realize that the United States is in the middle of hard economic times? The citizens of Twentynine have been hurt and are hurting from the collapse of the economy. Have you...

Coffee with Mel and Branson

The chief organizer for Action Council 29 raised a really good question during last Wednesday’s council meeting. He queried why those whom disagree with him didn’t have any of their own suggestions for Chalk-Fest. Here are some suggestions Mr. Berlin. 1. The beer garden thing should be put to rest. Good for making money, bad for the community. 2. Plan something really, really cool for the kids. You guy are artists so you can come up with something? Don’t charge any money for this event. Families are hurting in...
