ChalkFest 29 promoters wants more public funding

Today’s mantra. . . “The City of 29 Palms is not a piggyback for the art community… The City of 29 Palms is not a piggyback for the art community… The City of 29 Palms is not a piggyback for the art community.” Comes now Action Council 29 to ask for another yearly handout of public funds. During this week’s City Council meeting, during public comments, Chairman of Action Council29, Ray Kinsman, described plans for a Chalk Fest in November. He  asked for a fresh slurry seal on the...

Is the Devil wearing ear muffs?

hell-frozen-over

There are two things I want to bring up tonight before we all go to bed. First I want to wish both Steves a happy happy release from the bondage of the Public Service as Council Members. It was one hell of a 8 years for Spear and an equally interesting 4 years for Mr. Flock. All in all both I believe did their very best for the community. I truly wish both the very best and offer the web site to them if ever they get a hankering...

GPAC Jerks around and runs out of time revisited

GPAC Jerks around and runs out of time revisited

Originally posted Nov 28, 2009— Lead by a complete incompetent fool (the incarnate of the Emperor of California Joshua Norton I) and weighted down by an over abundance of self-serving Eco-loons, the General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) finds itself at the end of the line. What started out to be a way for the average citizen to have a say in the future of Twentynine Palms, turned out to be a soapbox for special interest groups like the Mojave Land Trust, Community OHV Watch and the Grunt-Smith-Flanagan Cabal. Chairman...

Defending the Constitution: Chalk this one up to a 1st Amendment Fight

Defending the Constitution: Chalk this one up to a 1st Amendment Fight

Twentynine Palms, Ca– The problem with the Chalkapalooza fiasco, is it brings out the very worst in some very good people. What we have here, is in our own small way, is  the Tea Party against the Red Coats. The Chalk-Fest argument had nothing to do with whether I liked Mel Berlin or Action Council 29 and everything to do with the 1st Amendment principle of a separation of church/non-profits and the State. The comments of Mel Berlin and Mr. Miller made in the local Desert Trail News Paper...

Our own little Bell to answer: The Fix is in

Twentynine Palms, Ca– Is there anyone who does not think special interest groups have the 29 Palms City Council and City Manager in their pocket? Well this story should convince even the most ardent believer of the saintliness of the “in crowd” being ass deep in dirty dealings. The Desert Trail reports that the Council has to have a special meeting to approve this “Chalkfest” Fiasco but, Action Council 29 on the other hand says, “… uooz guys made a deal.” The Desert Trail > Archives > The Desert...

As the funding drys up, the artists devour one another

July 21, 2010

chalk-art-1

29 Palms–It would appear that the artist community is imploding right before our very eyes.  This week, Mel Berlin gnaws on one of the founding appendages of the artist community Chuck Caplinger, as he defends the dying carcass of “Action 29″ from the circling wolves of those seeking to gather what is left of public art funding. The Desert Trail > The Desert Trail > Editorial > Guest Soapbox: Action 29’s death exaggerated In response to an article appearing in the Thursday July 15, issue of The Desert Trail...

The Political Jungle of 29 Palms

July 14, 2010

I walked into the City Council meeting before most and watched as all the artsy farts eat cheese and crackers playing press the flesh with the artists that had been “selected” to display the wares at City Hall. There were murmurers and rumblings about the “art in public places” issues, who was running for councilmen and who wasn’t and who shouldn’t. I listened as someone was talking about the hotel folks that withdrew their request for money. All-in-all is was the funniest crap I was hearing, or so I...

What? No local 29 Redevelopment contracts?

What? No local 29 Redevelopment contracts?

Isn’t the purpose of local redevelopment money to stimulate local jobs and business activity in the community? The money is being sucked out of town. That’s what local Blair Foley believes is going on.  And he doesn’t like it much that local business are missing out on opportunities to bid on city contracts. “The nursery was never informed of the project’s landscaping needs or asked to give a bid. This seems to be the “modus operandi” for many projects in this town … outsiders get the contracts.” “If I...

Cactus Thorns receives Award

Award

In addition to this Certification of Appreciation Award, Thorns also received a letter from the Arm Services YMCA thanking it for its sponsorship in their YMCA’s 2010 Soap Box Derby. SUPPLEMENTAL COMMENTARY ABOUT THINGS LOCAL I must apologize to everyone for harping on this, but I think it necessary since it’s my opinion that the local newspapers and the guy who use to be a vacuum salesman you hear singing and yacking in the mornings on local radio have blacklisting Cactus horns. [I guess I would be singing too...

Put The Blame Where Blame Belongs

Put The Blame Where Blame Belongs

Well I got a panic call that I was supposed to go right over to the Desperate Trail and read Kurt’s latest screed. I did, I laughed. My heart went pitier pat.  He almost got it. Not quite but almost. What the Desperate Trail forgets in all the blame game is, who was the silly son of a bitch who brought this project to the town? Well it starts with Jay and ends with Corbin. This from day one fiasco is the pride and joy of the guy that the Tea and Crumpet crowd has...
