County in Utah wins title to R.S. 2477 roads | Christian Probasco | NewWest.Net By Christian Probasco A significant victory on road ownership for a southern Utah county could establish a precedent that could alter the way wilderness is designated in the West. The recognition of Kane County’s title to the historic “Skutumpah Road” in a district court case by Judge Clark Waddoups, and subsequent recognition of its title to four more routes, has given representatives of Kane County hope they may finally get a fair hearing on the...

Supreme Court Hits 9th Circuit in Pair of Opinions Upholding Defense Lawyer Decisions – News – ABA Journal

Supreme Court Hits 9th Circuit in Pair of Opinions Upholding Defense Lawyer Decisions – News – ABA Journal In a case from Oregon and another from California, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that criminal defense lawyers provided adequate assistance of counsel and that their onetime clients were not eligible for habeas relief. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote both opinions overturning decisions by the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. His opinion (PDF) in the California case, Harrington v. Richter, opens with a criticism of the federal...

Calif. War Memorial Cross Ruled Unconstitutional | Liveblog | Christianity Today Adelle M. Banks, Religion News Service A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday a veterans’ memorial featuring a 43-foot cross on California’s Mount Soledad is unconstitutional. “The use of such a distinctively Christian symbol to honor all veterans sends a strong message of endorsement and exclusion,” wrote Judge M. Margaret McKeown for the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. “It suggests that the government is so connected to a particular religion that it treats that religion’s symbolism as its...

Yes Virgina, We Believe in Jesus too

I am about the least likely Mormon to ever be an authority on Church teachings. I am not even close to being perfect. I sin with every blog  I make and every foul word I utter.  The only thing that saves me from the sudden smite of the hand of the Lord is I am in a constant state of repentance. While the spirit is willing it has always seemed the earthly creature that it dwells in is weak and always falls short of the glory of the Lord....

Well other than that it was your regular dog and pony show

The COW meeting was well attended by the pro-off road group. We out number the greens 1.5 times. Local Code Enforcement head Mike Romage was actually brilliant. He dodged and parried like Earl Flynn as he explained that as much as COW would like to make a big deal of things there wasn’t much of anything to make a big deal about. OHV complaints are way down. Tickets are way down and it seems that everyone except the Cow “Steer-ing Committee” who wanted to talk about threats and intimidation....

Two ways of life collide in Wonder Valley

First published in the Los Angeles Times on January 5, 2010. Reporting from Wonder Valley — Eric Hamburg bought a house in this valley of wrinkled mountains and sugar-soft sand to escape life in Los Angeles and drink in the empty solitude only the desert can provide. “I loved the peace and quiet. I loved the tremendous sky. I loved the heat in the summer,” he enthused about his remote getaway outside Twentynine Palms. “It was like a safety valve for me.” FOR THE RECORD: Wonder Valley: An article...

Star Weekly – Local Desert News Article – Not First to be Accused

Star Weekly – Local Desert News Article – Not First to be Accused In a story we ran last week we noted that a small Hi-desert radio station seemed to us to be giving an inordinate amount of airtime to a candidate in the Twenty Nine Palms city council elections. That candidate, Jim Corbin, ended up winning the election. We didn’t name the radio station but we have just received a threat of a libel lawsuit from station owner Gary Daignealt. It left us to wonder, what would Benjamin...
