Twentynine Pams, CA– Since I’ve been spending time photographing horses a friend of mine suggested that I attend the Morongo Basin Horsemen’s Association Play day on January 25 at Parkers’ Area in Twentynine Palms. This was the first Playday that I had attended since I quit participating and it seemed strange to just be an onlooker. (I was going to say how many years it had been but I decided that it’s too depressing to think how long it’s been.) There was a nice turnout and it was fun to watch as there were riders of all skill and age levels as well as all types of horses and one mule. I had forgotten to take a lunch but luckily Dan and Fay O’Brien, owners of Mustards Last Stand, were selling food and drinks. Even though they had the only concession their prices were reasonable. I started out by eating one hotdog. It tasted so good that by the time I was done I had eaten three! It’s a good thing that I ran out of money or no telling how many I would have eaten. I spoke to Lori Parker who, along with her husband Art, own the arena. She said that spectators are welcome and encouraged to [...]

Hi-Desert Water District President Sarann Graham heading to Sacramento to attend a 2 hr Gala Reception at Ella’s Dining Room and Bar located in the downtown district of Sacramento using ratepayer funds! Yucca Valley, Ca.- It must be tough growing old and having missed the opportunity of being an important lobbyist working in Sacramento or Washington. This was never my dream but apparently Hi-Desert Water District President Sarann Graham, a career politician, still dreams of the “Big Top.” A self pro-claimed “Political Junkie,” her words, not mine, she enjoys a little jaunt to D.C. or Sacramento on the HDWD rate payer’s dime. In January 2008, she traveled to Washington D.C. and again in March 2009. I do not how many days she stayed there or the reasons for those jaunts, but she is very sure to turn in every receipt she is entitled to receive as well as $125.00 per day, which usually includes the day before and the day after which are “traveling days.” God forbid after paying hundreds of dollars for her trip that she should have to pay for one meal of $9.49! She turned in her receipt for reimbursement. Her last trip to Sacramento on November [...]

The use of property tax increments laundered through the old draconian redevelopment agencies before being euthanized is staggering: 58% went to redevelopment agencies. Now, however, the Legislative Report estimates schools and community colleges will receive over half the revenues with the demise of redevelopment agencies. Legislative Analyst Report – California 2011-2012 Budget (scroll down 4 pages). This just may stave off another local tax increase from Copper Mountain College which inevitably would have been necessary. Our greatest assets are our children and college students who will eventually take the rein of society. Meanwhile, the 29 City Council continues to hide behind fancy-pants attorneys, bleeding the system, and an overpaid City Managers — who btw is a really nice guy. They continue to scheme and plan for the extraction of debt Bond money for a playhouse. This money must go to local schools, CMC and local districts and agencies. By design, they continue with their frivolous assault for an unnecessary fifth (5) playhouse in the Basin at the expense of the youth and college students in our area. [...]

The school district announced Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 1, it will close Monument, the alternative high school in Twentynine Palms, and move students, faculty and staff to Sky High in Yucca Valley. District administrators will deliver layoff notices to 11 elementary teachers, two high school teachers and about five special education teachers. Additionally, the school district is eliminating management and classified positions at the district office and at unspecified schools. The changes should begin to take place in the next school year, Sky High School principal Ron Cox said. Superintendent Jim Majchrzak cited declining enrollment and state funding cuts to public education as reasons for the changes. In a time when it really is all about the Children, the City of Twentynine is still stuck in 2011 and trying to promote a [...]

Yucca Valley, Ca.- Opinion. Get out your air sick barf bags because the Hi-Desert Water District Board of Directors wants to jet around from here to there on your dime! At the last meeting there was an “Emergency” item placed on the agenda because Staff just received notification of a conference relating to water issues that would be taking place before the next meeting. This conference was approved, this ONE TIME, to authorize the Directors to attend and be paid $125 daily, meals, mileage, taxi and often hotel accommodations. HDWD President Sarann Graham decided she wanted to attend a meeting of the State Regional Board and appointed herself to fly up to Sacramento WITHOUT prior authorization. When I objected to her trip during public comments, Graham responded, “I mentioned this several times to the other Directors that I wanted to go and they did not say no.” Not only did Graham fly up to Sacramento without authorization, she stayed at a hotel overnight when other attendees flew back home the same day. I am waiting to review her reimbursement slips, if any, for that trip to Sacramento and will post the information. February 1st, agenda item #6 of the HDWD [...]

Yucca Valley, Ca.- Long time employees are being culled from the herd…some disappearing without warning or courtesy notification from Town Manager, Mark Nuaimi. One friendly and hard working employee received a 5 year longevity pin and the following week read the advertisement to hire a replacement for that position. Familiar names like Christine, Jeannie, Peggy, Keith were shown the door in a move to save money for the town. These fine employees did not receive any small token “Award of Appreciation” for their past contributions to our community. As a matter of fact, one ex-employee walked up to Nuaimi seated at a local restaurant to say a friendly hello and he could not even bother to look up and say hello back. He must have checked in his hood and hatchet at the door with this attitude of superiority. If you have a chance to review the video of Human Resource Director, Dani Lassiter, you will observe Nuaimi’s gushing, glowing reviews and best wishes for her retirement from the Town of Yucca Valley. No Oscars going out for that performance, in my opinion. Check out Lassiter’s wincing from Nuaimi’s uncharacteristic “side hugs” as he thanked her for all her [...]

The Hi-Desert Star is conducting an interesting website POLL. I think the Poll inaccurately reflect that residents do not support the proposed increase in sales tax. Had the right question been asked, I think the Poll would reflect that residents do support the tax increase. Should Yucca Valley residents support a 1 percent sales tax to help pay for the sewer system? 1. Yes: 37 % 2. No: 61% 3. I’m not sure: 2% Although the POLL serves a good purpose, it falls short of the most important query which should be on he minds of Town Hall officials. I think the question below would show a resounding yes vote for a sewer tax, but not for pork barrel project or infrastructure projects outside and separate from the sewer project. 4. Should Yucca Valley residents support a sales tax increase for more than is necessary for mandated sewers? Here is a another question that Town Hall officials do not want asked: 5. Should Yucca Valley retain a public relations firm to promote the tax increase? Town Hall officials are getting very pushy with their proposed add-on tax (not for the sewer project) that would end up in the general account [...]

While Loma Linda earned a “B” for creating a smoke free environment and for reducing sales of tobacco products, the American Lung Association gave Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley an “F”. Smoking is the second biggest cause of death globally and is responsible for the death of one in ten adults worldwide. There are more important things going on in town than redevelopment funds, bucking state laws and empire building. That is the message for 29 Palms. City Managers Richard Warne, Mark Nauimi and the respective 10 City Councilmembers are not paying attention to our local communities. Are those exorbitant salaries of the managers reflected by their job performance on the day-to-day services to the community? 29 has an outdated website… how difficult is it to inform web-users who the correct Mayor of 29 Palms is? You’d think a City Manager would pay more attention to managing the town and less attention to the California League of Cities and bad legal advise. Tobacco control report card on cities (San Bernardino County) A grade: 0 B grade: Loma Linda C grade: 0 D grade: Adelanto, Rancho Cucamonga F grade: Twentynine Palms, Yucca Valley… Apple Valley, Barstow, Big Bear Lake, Chino, [...]

Redevelopment Agency, Born 1945-Expired 02/01/2012 The Public is invited to view the casket of the Redevelopment Agency, RDA, displayed in repose at various rotundas of local Cities and Towns throughout California. Having lived a long and illustrious life since 1945 the RDA has been unplugged from life support and will return dust to dust and ashes to ashes on February 1st. The expired RDA is leaving behind a long list of co-dependents and co-defendants of connected builders and Eminent Domain attorneys that had been the beneficiaries of loose RDA purse strings in the past. It is expected future projects will continue to thrive the old fashion way…..if the development deal pencils out on its own accord, it will move forward. The abrupt death of RDA will renew pride of ownership for many citizens and restore their right to own land. The dark cloud of RDA squashing property rights in the name of “blight” are over and a new day is born! Let’s pray for RDA that God will be merciful upon Judgement Day, were there too many sins to atone for? While many legislators are looking to extend RDA life-support measures, Governor Brown has pounded a wooden stake deep in [...]

Yucca Valley, Ca.- Mark Nuaimi, the Town Manager of our little rural town, population just over 20,000 residents, is receiving a large salary of $ 190,000.00 plus benefits and a monthly mileage stipend of $600. This is a contributing factor as I address the facts of the Board of Equalization which state increasing taxes will hurt the poor more than the rich. While there is a stated average amount of monthly income for Yucca Valley, let us be specific about the low income and the senior citizens trying to make ends meet with their $900 a month government checks. Some are receiving less but let us compare the two side by side, for argument’s sake using the $900 per month. You do the math: YV Town Manager Mark Nuaimi $190,000.00 a year + $10,000 401K + $ 7, 200.00 annual Automobile Allowance + Health Ins $12,000 annual. YV Senior Citizens/Low Income $10,800.00 a year In Nuaimi’s recent proposal to “educate” the public to vote for a 1% tax increase, he hired some big guns (with our tax dollars) to saturate the voting public to convince us this will be a benefit for us. There will be radio ads, print ads, [...]
