SACRAMENTO – AB 1506, which Assemblyman Paul Cook (R- Yucca Valley) and Assemblyman Kevin Jeffries (R-Lake Elsinore) introduced to end the rural fire tax, passed out of the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources this afternoon. Since the tax was first imposed in June 2011 as part of the state budget, the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection (CBFFP) has increased the tax from $90 to $150 per parcel. The tax affects homeowners living in State Responsibility Areas (SRA) for fire protection, regardless of whether they already receive service...

Glendale may be forced to sell Alex Theatre – latimes.com

Glendale may be forced to sell Alex Theatre – latimes.com

Millions of dollars’ worth of planned improvements at the Alex Theatre have been put on hold, and Glendale may be forced to sell the historic venue because of the state’s elimination of local redevelopment agencies. Glendale Arts, the nonprofit group that operates the theater, said it had postponed upgrades until it determined whether transfer of the venue’s ownership from the now-defunct redevelopment agency to the city was legal. If not, the theater could be sold as an agency asset. In February, a new law took effect shutting down California’s...

Raises more tax revenue, but still shortchanges schools On March 14, 2012, the Governor filed a new tax increase proposal with the Attorney General’s office.  It has been suggested in news accounts that this will be the basis of the Governor’s 2012-13 budget proposal.   The data from the Department of Finance indicates that the proposal would raise $9 billion in 2012-13, up $2.1 billion from the Governor’s original proposal.  Note that the projected state deficit in 2012-13 is $9.2 billion. The essential elements of the Governor’s new tax increase...

You’re a 19 year old kid. You’re critically wounded and dying in The jungle somewhere in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam .. It’s November 11, 1967. LZ (landing zone) X-ray. Your unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense from 100 yards away, that your CO (commanding officer) has ordered the MedEvac helicopters to stop coming in. You’re lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns and you know you’re not getting out. Your family is half way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and...

March 15, 2012

Editors Note: San Bernardino County is in a similar boat and needs some strong minded negotiators to divvy up the Redevelopment Tax Increment Fairly.   Contra Costa County needs a few good men and women. Actually, it needs way more than a few. The board of supervisors must fill 44 slots on the oversight boards that will supervise the dismantling of redevelopment agencies. The task is horrifically complex, and the pay is zilch. But the county has no choice. The state Supreme Court earlier this year upheld legislation that shut down, as of...

Christian Science Monitor (03-11-13): GARNER, N.C. – Leaning against a scrub pine as preschoolers scurry about at his feet, Shane Gazda, father of 3-year-old twins, recalls a conundrum he faced earlier that morning: whether to take his Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun to a Groundhog Day celebration in this town’s White Deer Park. After all, what was once against the law in North Carolina – carrying a concealed gun in a town park, square, or greenway – is now, as of Dec. 1, 2011, very much allowed. To...

Derry Advocates for Creation of Animal Services Commission

tcbrass

SAN BERNARDINO, CA – Supervisor Neil Derry announced today that he would bring forth plans to create an Animal Services Commission similar to one established in the City of Los Angeles.  The commission would increase the degree of transparency and accountability by incorporating a citizen oversight component.   The success rate of pet adoptions has increased dramatically due in part to the development of fantastic programs like “Pets for Patriots” by the Department of Animal Care & Control.  And the award-winning spay and neuter program has buttressed a challenging...

New Draconian Use Tax exploits Californians

New Draconian Use Tax exploits Californians

Come tax day this  April, you will be paying a new USE TAX whether you owe it or not. It’s factored in how much you owe the state in new taxes based upon “perceived” consumer purchases. If you purchased nothing, you still owe; if you spend more the state guesses what they think you owe. Specifically, this will impede improvements in the economy, undermine confidence in the economy and, sadly, rub salt in the face of lower income families and stick it to seniors. You know, it’s no longer...
