The Public Arts Advisory Committee (PAAC) of the City of Twentynine Palms and the Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to host a community Arts and Business Roundtable on Thursday, Feb. 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This free event is open to the public and will be held at the Community Center, 74325 Joe Davis Drive, across from Luckie Park in Twentynine Palms.
A unique challenge has been issued to local artists by the Public Arts Advisory Committee (PAAC) of the City of Twentynine Palms: Envision the surface decoration for a portable replica of the iconic “29!” sculpture. The newly constructed portable “29!” sculpture, which is 96 inches wide and 72 inches high, will be mounted on a trailer and displayed at various community functions and public locations throughout the year, echoing the exuberance of the large steel sculpture at the base of Donnell Hill on the highway downtown. Artists are invited to submit conceptual sketches to the PAAC by February 15, 2012, showing their proposed vision for the surface decoration in paint, mosaic, ceramic, or other mixed media application. The challenge is open to individual artists or an art group, club, or organization in the Morongo Basin. The PAAC will select three finalists to elaborate on their concepts with detailed color drawings or scale mock-ups, and each artist or group selected as a finalist will be awarded $200 to compensate for time and materials for this phase of the competition. A commission of $1,000 will be awarded to the winning artist or group to execute the final decoration, along with a materials budget of up [...]

Twentynine Palms, Ca– (Press Release) Ron Getman, Save-A-Lot District Manager, and I enjoyed sharing the great news that Save-A-Lot will be opening a new store in February. We want to make sure the community knows about our Neighborhood Preview on February 1 from 5-8 pm. Everyone is invited to come see the store, sample our products, learn about our great prices and quality food, and register for free give-away’s – including the chance to win one year of free groceries! An informational flier is attached that you can share with friends, colleagues, and constituents. There will be a short program welcoming our guests, along with comments from the mayor, and the chamber of commerce. At this time, Save-A-Lot will also present a contribution of $2,500.00 to the 29 Palms Community Food Pantry in the fight against hunger. For those of you who are scheduled to be part of the short program, a representative from our public relations firm, Lane PR, will be in touch with you to finalize the “run of show.” Unfortunately, I have a schedule conflict and won’t be able to be there for the festivities, but will be there in spirit! However, if you have any questions [...]

The City of Twentynine Palms is planning two community meetings in November to discuss Project Phoenix and the proposed improvements for downtown Twentynine Palms. The meetings are open to the public and will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the Community Services Building, 74325 Joe Davis Drive, next to Luckie Park in Twentynine Palms. “This is an opportunity for the community to come and learn about the project and provide early input into the project development,” said City Manager Richard Warne. “The purpose of the meeting is to talk about plans for the redevelopment and revitalization of the downtown core.” Since 2008, the City has been working with property and business owners to define alley, off-street parking, and curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements involving commercial properties that front the south side of Highway 62 in downtown Twentynine Palms. This endeavor has been called Project Phoenix. The proposed development plan for Project Phoenix was revised during the summer of 2011 to include a 39,000-square-foot community center with recreation and special event space, including a theater stage and auditorium, along with public parking, infrastructure improvements, and 40 housing units. The site area now encompasses 15 acres, from Highway 62 south to Cactus Drive, bounded by Cholla Avenue on the [...]
