…And The Clock Is Ticking

GovernmentShutdown

As the clock is ticking, many Americans are wondering whether we will meet the fate of a Government shutdown or not. There is no denying that this country is in serious debt. More like a $14 Trillion dollar debt, yet both sides of the aisle can’t come to any agreement on how to fix the budget, what to cut and how deep to cut. Instead, each side is blaming the other, but that is not going to fix anything. As of last night, there was still no deal or...

It’s been a little over a week ago after Japan got rocked by a 9.0 earthquake. To top it off, they had a tsunami that literally destroyed some areas of the country. Japan didn’t know what was coming, but it did. Are we ready for the ‘big one’ to hit here in California? Since we live out here in the desert and not near the ocean, chances of us having a tsunami in our area are zero to none. Still, we need to prepare before, during and after a...

February 6, 2011

bich-darby

Last month, there has been a string of burglaries going on in 29. One of those who was a victim by such burglaries was one of my family members. Richard Darby, 45, a known drug dealer and drug addict has been burglarizing homes to support his drug habit. Last Friday, January 28, 2011, after an investigation, Darby was finally arrested along with his female accomplice and charged with burglary. It went down like this: Darby’s female partner in crime squealed on him and he in turn squealed on her....

In case anyone is wondering what is or was going on at Desert29, I made the decision to shut it down and merge with Cactus Thorns. Cactus Thorns has always been the best alternative news source and I found it silly to post the same news Thorns was. Dan and I have talked about merging the two blogs together and as of today, all my stories and postings will be here. I really enjoyed, at one time, keeping the community informed of what is/was going on in the desert,...

Should Public Service Officials Carry A Firearm?

January 23, 2011

Commentary | Opinion | January 2011 With all the commotion going on with the tragic shooting in Tucson, AZ, should public officials carry a firearm? Are they safe? Should every citizen be allowed to carry a firearm? I think we should for our safety and public officials should always carry a firearm for their safety. Unfortunately, we live in a world where it’s not even safe to stand in front of your local super market and listen to a public figure speak. At the same time, every person who...

Is Our City Officials Safe? Are We?

After hearing and reading about what happened at a board meeting in Panama City, Florida, where a disgruntled man started shooting the board members because his wife lost her job at the school district. It makes me wonder if our city officials and those in the community who attend meetings are safe. For instance, how would we know if someone got irrate or was upset at a council meeting and started shooting the council members because they disagreed with them? Even though there is a police officer that attends...

Why All The Fancy Hotels In 29 Palms?

Editorial by Karen Walton | 29 Palms economy | Development | What is up with all the fancy hotels going up in 29 Palms? Are they just taking up valuable space? Is 29 Palms really going to have that many tourists and visitors? With all the complaining about getting a couple of big box stores in 29 which would have done great for the economical future of the town and created jobs, nobody is complaining about the new hotels going up. Looking at the Marriott Hotel across the street...
