"You frost my cookies. I'm going to move aggressively in your face." -- Mel Berlin
By now most people have read Mel Berlin’s email sent to 29 Palms City Manager Mike Tree. And you’ve read the other posts put up in Cactus Thorns concerning these bizarre turn of events with the City Manager, City Council and Mel Berlin.
Then you know he’s back, the same guy, for more tax money. He dumped the name of Action Council 29 and his group came up with a brand new name.
In Berlin’s Sept 7 e-mail to City Manager Mike Tree, the city was notified that Action Council 29 was changing its official name from Action Council 29 to Action Council for the Morongo Basin. This is really trite but it has to be said: Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice and shame on me.
Many people already get it. At issue are tax dollar coupled with hard times. Mr. Berlin tell the world “he is in a battle” for tax funds and “he will be in your face to get it.” The most important thing I can say is to direct this to the City Manager.
Why would the city manager allow Mr. Berlin to address him in such an assuming and arrogant tone. This conduct is nonprofessional. It would appear that Mr. Berlin’s unprofessional conduct is acceptable with many in the art world in Morongo Basin. That their spokesman talks down to the City Manager like he was a political hack, I resent that. The City Manager should take note because the office is being demeaned.
The City manager is paid about $10,000 a month (not including perks) to conduct business in a professional manner. What sort of personal or professional relationship does the city manager have with Mr. Berlin? Frankly, I think the gentlemen Mr. Mel Berlin is acting like an obnoxious bully and an old fool? But, be sure, he has abused the city office of city manager. This makes makes Mike Tree look weak.
Is there any logical reason for the city to take up Mr. Berlin’s battle? The city manager should be fair to all. Voters are expecting their City Council to see to that.
Isn’t it about time the people in Morongo Basin who are artist to have a little caucus with Mr.Berlin. Suggest this man eat a couple dozen tamales and shut his hole. I’ll tell you right now Berlin is doing serious damage to the artist community in the Morongo Basin.
The really cool thing about this town are the many churches and benevolent organizations that deal with people’s most pressing needs. The various food banks in the 29 community actually need food to feed children, families and many other needy Americans. Organizations are dealing with less money because donations to charities are down. People and families are focused on riding out this nasty recession. The City of 29 needs to get in touch with real life.
The council turned Berlin once down for a $10,000 gift of public funds, not he wants more for the the same organization under a different name, formerly known as Action Council 29. This is every bit as much drama as reading a well-written screenplay. The City Manager is one of it’s actor in terms of the inferences one may draw from Mr. Berlin’s email.
Can anyone imagine someone writing to a City Manager and writing what Mr. Berlin wrote: “What really frost my cookies” when speaking of not getting all he wanted from the City.” Then he writes “[He] is going to move aggressive very much in your face.” Mr. Berlin is in a war. His email says that. He is at war for taxpayers money battling taxpayers. There appears to be a very strange or unusual relationship between the two.
Mr. Berlin is a foolish Don Quixote.
Berlin has put a jacket on every taxpayer in the city and the world at large who is concerning about tax payer’s dollars. He sees naysayers in the shadows where none exist. Mr. Berlin has yet to address the tax payers issue. What Berlin doesn’t know – or if he does know he has no regard for — is that when you have your hand out for public funds the public is involved. Input is expected and welcome.
Actually Mr. Berlin behavior is setting the city up for a taxpayers suit, and he’s duping the City Manager. All the while the drama King is demeaning the office of City Manager. The city is very fortunate to have peace loving people.
Thank you Mr. Berlin for amusing us.

This whole fiasco was started with a yet another back room meeting with an unnamed city employee and unnamed council member. I would hope the city employee and the setting council would do the honorable, and inform the citizens, wwho were they? Were there unauthorized assurances by these two? If so what were they?
The fact that the participants in this won’t come forward and clear this up is a reason to vote for change, how many of the setting council members are aware of the meeting, and why won’t they come forward and clear this up. It is up to the voters to stop these types of buddy buddy back room deals. Make sure you are registered, and vote for change. Let’s clean house, you the people deserve better only if you vote for it.
Thank you for responding 29 Candidate Mark Clemons. The one thing I see here is that Mr.Berlin’s incriminating email seems more that a declaration of war and demand for tax funds, but it’s also a demand notice to pay up. The city is being billed!
What use are rights when they are secretly sabotaged before they are heard? Public officers and employees are required under the California Constitution to take an oath of office. Why are some treated more equal than others?
Let’s stay focused, Mr. Berlin is a private citizen representing a private non-profit, he has the right to his rage and rants at our city, as well as the right to address the council for any reason even if it is to ask for a hand out. It is his privilege. What I have a problem with is what I will at this point call a secret meeting with an unidentified city employee and an unidentified council member, and what was said in that secret meeting to lead Mr. Berlin to think the handout was a done deal. I believe the tax payers have the right to this information. Poor management and oversight has lead to many scandals, and many cover ups have lead to criminal prosecution.
