words to live by
Mel, even though you are acting like a spoiled child that didn’t get everything you wanted for Christmas, you have provided a service to the city of Twentynine Palms. I think your disdain for the citizens of Twentynine Palms comes through loud and clear, from your actions at the city council meeting and your post online. Do you not realize that the United States is in the middle of hard economic times? The citizens of Twentynine have been hurt and are hurting from the collapse of the economy. Have you not read the headlines about crowded classrooms, schools that can’t afford new textbooks, teacher layoffs, parents that have to pay for transportation to school, food pantries that are empty, and families that are losing their homes? Stop acting like a brat and be thankful for what you did get in these tough times. In addition to thanking Mayor Flock, you should also stand behind the two councilmen that did try to get you what you wanted. Instead you are throwing them under the bus. In my opinion, the vote should have been against any support at all. Does that make me a “crazy?”
I like the way you explain how you feel about anyone that doesn’t agree with how wonderful Action 29 and their ideas are with “I pity them their infantile rhumanations, it’s kinda like braying at the moon ’cause they fear it.” and “…It’s not too late to quell the spread of this infection. Citizens of taste and sensibilities, can still gather together and enjoy family friendly events created by Action 29. The crazies do not suffer , the enlightened informed suffer the greatest , by loosing the valuable experiences we are presenting for their whole family’s enjoyment. There is still time to enjoy the wonders of 29. “
Mel, I think you are the symptom of a disease called elitism- leadership by a “superior group.” Citizens of Twentynine would do well to remember that at the city council meeting you said Twentynne Palms was not worth your “personal investment.” By your words and actions, you, Mel, have sullied the reputation of Action 29.
Here’s the service Mel provided to the City of Twentynine: his expectation of money before the event was voted on opened even more voters/taxpayers eyes to what many here call ” the good ol’ boys club”. He also gave Steve Spear the opportunity to set the bar for what we, the citzens, will for evermore expect from “our elected officials.” Steve took the time prior to the meeting to research the claims made by Action 29. Using facts, he dispelled the myth of this event making a profit for the city. He used photos to show the condition of Luckie Park’s parking lot and more photos to show the condition of roads that could be improved for the safety of Twenynine residents. He had facts to back up the other side of the arguement that many of us in Twentynine were expressing, there are better ways to use what money we have. I hope all city council hopefuls were taking notes. This kind of research is what we should expect every time from every member of the city council.
As an afterthought, we should also expect this type of hard news reporting from our local media.

Dear Cora,
THANK YOU! Your comments were right on the mark.
A friend asked me to log in and read what you wrote regarding the Chalk Fest. I couldn’t agree more. I voted “yes” to issue the permit for this event. When Mel Berlin said he had $50-60K in the bank and could pay for this event without the city’s help, he was encouraged to do that. He then made the statement that the City of Twentynine Palms “was not worth his personal investment”. The item that I voted “No” on was spending $16K of taxpayers’ money to slurry seal the parking lot at Luckie Park, which is not due to be done for another two years (I would have voted “yes” to slurry seal only that portion of the parking lot that was to be used for this event”. Hopefully, by then, the economy will turn around and allow us to do more things with taxpayers’ dollars.
To those who have stated publicly that I don’t care about Twentynine Palms -they are either stupid or ignorant, perhaps both. I have supported every event that this City has put on since I moved here over 20 years ago. I will continue to support events that are put on for our city’s good.
Perhaps Mel Berlin was under the impression that this event was a “done deal” due to his meeting with a member of the City Council and City Staff at least a month prior to the item being placed on the agenda to be heard by the entire City Council. Regarding the website ad and the ad in the Sun Runner magazine that stated the City was a “partner” in the Chalk Fest had donated $10K and had authorized the closing of Adobe Road for the event, which were all untrue, he gave a tongue lashing to the Council on the night of August 31 when an apology would have gone a long way.
If I am elected to keep my seat on the Council I PROMISE TO ALWAYS VOTE IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CIIZENS OF TWENTYNINE PALMS.
Cora, your support in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Jim
Mr. Harris,
I appreciate your response. I do notice what you vote for and against. I look forward to hearing what you have to say at the public forum.
[...] More coffee commin’ up, Gary. Look at the steam ufurl from your cup Gary. Hey, I know it’s tough. Accepting constructive criticism is not easy, but belly up to it. You see I’m not trashing you. What is said here stays here. Here’s what one long-time 29 resident and alternative media local blogger wrote about you: “Four councilmen voted against Mayor Flock’s motion to give a $10 k gift without any strings attached to spend as they set fit not in the interests of tax payers. You and your buddy Mr. Mel Berlin are long time friends. You guys are both Directors on the 29 Chamber. No need to trash Spear and Harris. Councilman Spear said the oath he took in office prevented his from voting for the proposal. Likewise with the $16,000 the city is putting up for an annual fundraiser. You [Gary]failed omitted this and continued in an underhanded personal attack.” — CoraHeiser. For Ms. Heiser entire story, click here. [...]
Once again I have not said or blogged:

Hopefully, there has just been some mistake made.

Why not inform the tax payers who was the employee? and who was the council member that would have the arrogance to mi$lead Mr. Berlin? Who was in the back room and put the cart before the horse? Who is being protected? I guess it is hard to change. It is the taxpayer’s dollars; don’t they have a right to know? Register and vote time to purge this city of these backroom practices.
