CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING AUGUST 31 WILL INCLUDE CHALK FEST 29, BUSINESS OVER-CONCENTRATION, SIGN CODE
A special meeting of the Twentynine Palms City Council will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31, at City Hall, 6136 Adobe Road. Topping the agenda for this meeting will be a public hearing to consider a Temporary Use Permit application by Action Council for 29 Palms for a large-scale community event—“Chalk Fest 29”—at Luckie Park in November.
The proposed three-day event would be held November 5, 6, and 7, 2010, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., and would consist of a community fair including professional and amateur chalk artists, musicians, food and beverage vendors, craft classes, filming and live entertainment. Estimations are that 3,000 to 5,000 visitors and locals would be expected to participate in the event.
Location for the event, Luckie Avenue in Luckie Park, is an alternative location to that considered by the Planning Commission at its regular meeting on Tuesday, August 3, at which time the request for the event had been proposed for Adobe Road, with a partial road closure between Joshua Lane and Buena Vista, including portions of Gorgonio Drive.
The Commission considered the request at that time, suggested possible Conditions of Approval, and forwarded the request with no specific recommendation to the City Council for its consideration and action. On August 31, the Council will consider the Temporary Use Permit as well as the possible level of City sponsorship requested by Action Council for 29 Palms.
Also on the agenda for the August 31 City Council meeting will be a report, discussion, and potential action on the issue of business over-concentration in downtown Twentynine Palms, specifically addressing tattoo, massage, barbershop, and nail businesses; and a proposed Code Amendment and general review of standards for signs within the commercial districts of the city.
The meeting is open to the public and begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 6136 Adobe Road, Twentynine Palms. Complete agendas and staff reports are available on the City’s website (www.ca.twentynine-palms.ca.us), or call City Hall for more information, 760-367-6799.
