SEXY HOTEL NAME CHANGE
Desert Hot Springs, CA - The Areolas resort spa was forced to change its name on the sign to “A” in order to win approval from the city. The local hoteliers association struggled to find a way deny the hotel membership but ran into a brick wall when the city said it couldn’t be done.
President of the Hoteliers Association, Judy Bowman protested to City Manager Rick Daniels about the hotel named after the body part of the area of the breast surrounding the nipple. The recently remodeled hotel features worship of Tantra, an eastern religion of sex as the gateway to enlightenment.
Naked people having a good time is nothing new to Bowman who has been operating the Living Waters clothing optional hotel and spa for many years with her husband Jeff who serves as a director of the local water board.
Areolas was denied a city sign permit using the official business name and instead settled for a sign identifying itself as “A Tantric Resort and Spa.” Advertising for the business on the Internet is vague but sexually suggestive.
“I told the manager [of Areolas] that several Hoteliers had expressed their concern about a business name that was in bad taste,” said Bowman, “…and perhaps this is the first time a business had tried to open with an offensive name, so there were no guidelines to stop it.”
While Bowman and other association members agonized over Areolas joining their organization there was nothing in the by-lays stopping a business from operating with the name of Penis or Pussy or even AssHole in the official name. Emails sent to the city manager from association members explored what legal options were available to stop Areolas but nothing came of it.
This is the second sex spa located in a residential neighborhood which has generated complaints from neighbors. The other hotel caters to swingers and advertises open sexual intercourse on the Internet. The chamber of commerce ribbon cutting for Areolas was attended by Mayor Yvonne Parks. Other city leaders were less enthusiastic.
“While I share many of the concerns that have been expressed over the past few days there are limitations on what the City can do and I have stretched those as best that I can,” wrote Daniels.
Since this issue occurred in March 2010 there has been no official discussion of changing the sign ordinance or the Hotelier Association by-lays.
