Sturges vs. Munsey Flashback! Election 2008
Yucca Valley, California-The year was 2008. The November Election focused on the National campaign between Barack Obama and John McCain for the office of the President of the United States of America. Elsewhere, in a small, rural windblown desert town just outside of Palm Springs with a population of only 22,000 residents, there was another contest for one open seat for the short term office of the Hi-Desert Water District Board of Director.
Flashback 2008! There were two candidates running “Heads Up” for this one opening, Margo Sturges and Dan Munsey. This sports phrase means there were two individuals competing heads-up against each other, also known as, head-to-head or one-on-one.
While this small election was not exactly on the same level as casting a vote for the future President, several citizens confided to me about the difficult choice they faced deciding who to vote for in this 2008 HDWD contest. Without asking who they voted for, I told them Dan was an outstanding candidate and even I would have voted for him if I were not a candidate in that same contest. I set their mind at ease by saying the truth of my heart.
With an action King Solomon would have been proud of, one citizen wanting to remain loyal, voted for BOTH of us on the same ballot even knowing that would invalidate the vote.
(Oh, by the way…..I came in 2nd place in that 2008 Election!)
In my recent press release announcing my candidacy for one of the three seats for the Hi-Desert Water Board of Directors, I included the following sentence, which I hope has been clarified by this stroll down memory lane of the above events in 2008:
“In the last election, I ran heads up against a very fine young candidate who is now Vice President Dan Munsey of the HDWD. Thank God I will be running WITH him and not against him this time around!”
Dan contacted me requesting that when I clarify my statement on Cactus Thorns, to please add the following:
“Dan Munsey has clearly stated that he will not be endorsing or supporting any candidate for any race, nor will he be accepting any endorsements from any candidates.” He explains in his email to me, “That he does this to prevent any candidate to feel that he owes them anything in return. Instead he wishes to focus on each issue facing the water district individually and make thoughtful, non-biased, and educated decisions.”
My part: I, Margo Sturges, am running as an individual and will not be endorsing any candidate for any race, nor will I accept any donations from special interests groups in order to remain non-bias serving only the interests of the ratepayers. I have no conflict of interest.
Readers: Please do your part and forward this “Flashback 2008″ clarification story link to everyone in your email address book, asking them to do the same.
