The race has officially begun for three open seats on the five-member Twentynine Palms City Council. As of the filing deadline of 5 p.m. Wednesday, August 11, seven candidates had qualified by completing their filing requirements and were certified by City Clerk Char Sherwood to be placed on the November 2, 2010, election ballot.
Incumbent Councilman Jim Harris, currently the Mayor pro tem, will be seeking to hold his seat for a second term on the Council. Two additional vacant seats are those of Mayor Steve Flock, who has served one term on the council, and Councilman Steve Spear, who chose not to run for a third term.
The six candidates for Twentynine Palms City Council in addition to Harris are Planning Commissioner Carey Alderson, businessman Larry Briggs, small business owner Mark W. Clemons, planning consultant Jay Corbin, businessman and Planning Commissioner Daniel L. Mintz Sr., and engineering technician and General Plan Advisory Committee member Steven D. Whitten.
Winners of the November election will be installed on December 14, 2010. They will join seated councilmen John Cole and Joel Klink, whose current terms extend through 2012.
