Eastvale City Councilman Jeff DeGrandpre abruptly resigned Wednesday night after accusing his council colleagues of engaging in “back-door deals,” causing dissension at City Hall and holding meetings that violated California’s open-meeting law.

DeGrandpre said he wished the city “the best of luck” and said his resignation would be effective July 1.

DeGrandpre, who played a crucial role in the effort to incorporate the city in 2010, was elected that year to the first Eastvale City Council and then re-elected in 2012.

Mayor Ike Bootsma said after the meeting that DeGrandpre’s announcement was totally unexpected.

He said he was unaware of any illegal meetings or back-door deals.

Councilman Bill Link said he was stunned.

“As much time and effort as he put into this city, I never thought he’d resign,” Link said.
