Joshua Tree, Ca.,- Did you miss this wonderful production last Saturday? The sold-out play at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center was a real hit and told the dramatic story of two persons, Bill W. and Dr. Bob, whose lives came together to save each other from the grips of alcoholism during the early 1930′s. Compelled to maintaining their sobriety, they knew it was a gift that they had to share and pass along to others in order to save themselves.
“The miraculous story, beautifully told, of the men who named the disease and created the cure.”-Martin Sheen
This wonderful play brought home the realities of the tortured lives of alcoholics who are unable to stop drinking due to something inherited that is part of their DNA. Over 145 years of sobriety was represented by this very talented troupe that brought laughter, tears and hope to the viewing audience. Some of the actors are currently involved in Al-Anon, a support group for family, friends and spouses of problem drinkers.
My husband, Bob S. has been sober for over 43 years. He says having gone through the program saved his life. He is never ashamed to discuss what he went through and always praises his family and friends that never gave up on him. He was really touched by this presentation and looks forward to the possible return for a repeat performance. My Bob S. has helped several persons to live a new life of sobriety by sharing his struggles of his many attempts to quit drinking.
After watching this play unfold, I understand a bit more about this struggle. As was pointed out in the play, only those who have the “disease of alcoholism” can truly understand what the other is going through…each pore of being cries out for just one more drink even though going down that path brings heartbreak and destruction.
While waiting for this production to return to the Hi-Desert Cultural Center, I urge you to read the book in hopes it will help you or a loved one. I’m told it is called the Big Book, the 12 Steps of AA.
Congratulations to the professional actors, Ron Young and Dean Apple and the incredible cast of “Bill W. and Dr. Bob.”For more information about A.A. visit>LINK
