Late Thursday afternoon, the 29 Palms Fire Department received a report of a hiker in distress along the popular 49 Palms Oasis hiking trail, just inside the Joshua Tree National Park boundaries. Initial reports stated that the hiker, an adult female, was passing out and possibly unconscious. Two firefighters from the downtown fire station responded to the call for assistance.
After rendezvousing with paramedics and park rangers at the 49 Palms trail-head, crews gathered equipment and started their long hike toward the oasis, equipped with EMS and rescue gear. Firefighters located the hiker approximately a mile and a half up the trail, near the oasis. Due to the difficult terrain and limited access to the location where the patient was found, Air Rescue 06, a hoist-capable helicopter operated by San Bernardino County, was requested and utilized to remove the patient from the scene.
It took firefighters only 20 minutes to reach the end of the trail and render aid to the distressed hiker. After the arrival of the helicopter, the patient was removed from the mountain side and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Safety Message: The weather is getting hotter. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water before and during strenuous activities.
