VVDailyPress.com-PHELAN • U.S. Rep. Paul Cook, R-Apple Valley, reached out this week to forest officials in an effort to bridge the divide in a controversial off-highway vehicle project located south of Phelan.

In a letter on Wednesday to San Bernardino National Forest Supervisor Joy Neuron, Cook asked that forest officials “continue an open dialogue with local residents who will be impacted by this proposed designation.”

Neuron authored last year the decision to construct 13.4 miles of 50-inch OHV trails, designate and maintain 9.6 miles of trails temporarily specified for OHV use and remove OHV use on 1.2 miles of road in an area north of Highway 138 near Interstate 15.

The Baldy Mesa OHV Trail and Staging Project has since caused strife among local residents, who say offroad vehicles don’t mesh well with the area’s hiking and equestrian enthusiasts. Six appeals to the project were previously rejected.

On Tuesday, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints in Phelan revealed Mormon Trail.com, an online petition to relocate the project, amid concerns that it twice crosses the historic Mormon Trail.

“These constituents feel as though the Forest Service did not adequately consult with local governments and entities during the process and would like continued consideration of their arguments,” Cook wrote.

An attempt on Thursday to reach a National Forest spokesperson was not successful.

Meanwhile, officials are seeking more than $2.4 million in OHVspecific grants to care for the project, according to five preliminary applications filed with California State Parks before a March 3 deadline.

The public comment period on preliminary applications for state grant funding ends April 7. Comments must be submitted to both Al Colby at acol by@fs.fed.us and to California State Parks by using the “Grants” tab at www.ohv.parks ca.gov, according to a news release.  Story Source>LINK

Well if the legislator formally known as Colon-el would have done right and saved Johnson Valley from his beloved Corps we would not be having this fight.

A day late a dollar short again, Cook.

  2. Larry Briggs Larry Briggs says:

Phelan is to the west of I-15. Johnson Valley is to the east. What’s the tie in with the base expansion?

  3. Dan OBrien Dan OBrien says:

Well Larry, glad you asked. In his brilliant attempt to mitigate the loss of 140,000 acres of the Johnson Valley OHV Area, he is waffling on the establishment of a 22 mile long cherry stem trail.

    The guys word is worthless.

  4. Larry Briggs Larry Briggs says:

Guessing now, but the cherry’s stem goes from Johnson Valley under the freeway and over to Phelan?

  5. Larry Briggs Larry Briggs says:

Just trying to figure out the connection. Guess there isn’t one.

    • Dan OBrien Dan OBrien says:

Seriously Larry… are you on crack? The nexus is The off road community NOT Everything in the 8th Congressional District is tied to Uncle Sam’s Mickey Mouse Club. And I assure you there are Millions of Off-Road Enthusiasts, while their might be no more than a couple of hundred thousand active duty Marines. Off Roaders VOTE in the district… While in most cases active Marines do not.

So the problem with your simplistic smart assed contention if it has nothing to do with the Marine Corps it has nothing to do with the 8th congressional district, shows you have no idea of the area and the opposing factions that are at odds with your fearless leader.

Here is the trick Larry, Get that Jazzy of yours trailered up, travel to the Victor Valley, Ridgecrest, Needles, or Bishop. You”re are going to find that very few people give a tinkers damn about the needs of MCAGCC. So everything does not have to have a nexus to the base, but everyone has land use issues and care about the Federal Overreach.

  6. Larry Briggs Larry Briggs says:

That’s more intelligent than your stupid maraschino cherry. You have to realize that the whole world does not follow the OHV day by day. Sometimes you sound and act like the radical Greens.
