29 Palms firefighters arrived to find a two-story multi-unit residence with heavy fire showing from the second floor. With mutual aid assistance from the Combat Center and Wonder Valley, 12 firefighters had the fire under control at 3:15 pm. No one was in the structure at the time of the fire and there were no injuries. The second floor was destroyed by the fire and the first floor suffered major damage from fire, smoke and water. The structure has a history of building code violations and the City of Twentynine Palms building inspector and code enforcement officer were on scene to assess the damage and indicated the building will be red-tagged as uninhabitable.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is being conducted by the Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb Detail. The structure loss is estimated at $50,000. A county fire engine from Joshua Tree covered the 29 Palms district during the fire.
