More than 130 people turned out Sunday afternoon to tour the Twentynine Palms estate of the late Huell Howser, the TV producer and host of KCET’s long running travel documentary “California’s Gold,” according to Jeff Wysard, broker of Keller Williams Realty in La Quinta.

“It was an amazing turnout,” Wysard said when he was asked to recap the results of an open house for the two-bedroom home on nearly 12 acres that’s priced at $395,000.

“When you have an open house, drawing 30″ in locales like this is a lot, Wysard noted.

But this was a home of Howser, who loved the serenity of the land near Joshua Tree National Park , with its abundance of hiking trails, star-lit vistas, Joshua Trees and mid-century modern architecture.

More than one offer was made on the property, Wysard said, declining to divulge the number until the fiduciary trustee is briefed later  Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Built in 1953 and renovated in the late 1990′s, the 2,221-square-foot Howser home features industrial-style architectural details. An adjacent, 70-acre parcel that Howser acquired from Jackie Autry also is on the market to preserve the mountain views. The asking price for the land is $354,000.

Howser, 67,  who also owned the Volcano House in Newberry Springs, died Jan. 27, 2013, in Palm Springs.

Proceeds from the sale of the Howser estate will be donated to Chapman University, Wysard said.

Since the sale, fans of Howser have been calling the newspaper and Keller Realty to try to get a glimpse of the home.

Come on Dan, you know you want one more city slicker to buy the place. Think of the welcome they will receive from the Inn crowd.
