A 1984 Ford Bronco was struck by a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee at 1:09 p.m. Thursday, killing both the 65-year-old man driving the Bronco and his passenger, a 36-year-old woman, according to the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station. Both the driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Jeep, 23-year-old Brooke Nemeth, of Yucca Valley, was treated and released at the scene.
According to a sheriff’s station news release, the Bronco was headed north on Warren Vista Avenue, approaching Yucca Trail. Nemeth was headed west on Yucca Trail, approaching Warren Vista Avenue. A witness saw the Bronco approach the stop sign at the intersection and then proceed to slowly roll forward into the intersection. Nemeth told deputies on scene that she was driving the posted speed limit of 50 mph and didn’t see the Bronco in the intersection.
Nemeth’s Jeep hit the passenger side of the Bronco, sending both vehicles northwest through the intersection until they came to rest in the right hand shoulder of the westbound lane on Yucca Trail.
The driver of the Bronco was extricated from his SUV by San Bernardino County firefighters, but died at the scene.
Sheriff’s deputies had a stretch of Yucca Trail blocked to eastbound traffic as they waited for the San Bernardino County Coroner to arrive.
The names of the victims have not yet been released, but the news release states the man was from Yucca Valley and the woman was from Junction City, KS.
The Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station’s Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the cause of the collision. Deputies have ruled out alcohol or drugs as a factor in the crash. For more on this story>LINK
