YUCCA VALLEY >> Sheriff deputies launched a special operation targeting panhandlers, leading to seven arrests Wednesday.

The eight-hour operation was spurred by an increase in calls for service and concern made to the sheriff’s Morongo Basin Station, according to a department news release.

Deputies investigated a report of people living illegally in a town-owned building in the 7300 block of Elk Trail. There, two transients were arrested on suspicion of trespassing and released at the scene, according to the department.

Yucca Valley Public Works was asked to properly secure and board up the property, the department said.

Deputies made five other arrests — three on suspicion of panhandling, one on suspicion of consuming alcohol in public and another on a misdemeanor public intoxication arrest warrant.

I’m very glad to see the Sheriff’s Department doing something about this. For years , every time I go to the grocery store at Food 4 Less , you always have skateboarders, panhandlers asking for money, and people just hanging out in front of the store, with their skateboards, bicycles , motorcycles, etc.

There has to be other places for people to hang out, and not in front of the grocery store. I’ve seen at least 10 people hanging out in front of the store at one time, it’s become ridiculous. Good for the Sheriff’s Department! It’s about time somebody did something.
