29 Palms, CA– Three themed exhibitions are planned for the remainder of 2014 in the Art in Public Places gallery at Twentynine Palms Visitor Center, 73484 29 Palms Hwy., downtown Twentynine Palms.

Desert artists are invited to create one (1) piece of original art for possible inclusion in each of the upcoming group exhibitions. Artwork needs to depict the theme of each show, and needs to be delivered to the visitor center on the designated In/Out days between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The theme for the spring show, April 1 to June 27, is “The Desert Rocks!” Life on the Faultline.” Artwork submissions are due on Friday, March 28.

The summer show from July 1 to September 26 is “Water in the Desert: Scarcity and Abundance.” In/Out day for artwork is Friday, June 27.

The fall-winter show from October 1 to December 26 is “Gold, Iron & Steel: A Metallic History of the Morongo Basin.” Artwork is due on Friday, September 26.

The Art in Public Places exhibitions are intended to make visitors aware of the vibrant art community by showcasing local artists. Themes are chosen to challenge artists’ exploration and to encourage newcomers as well as old timers to see the desert from a new perspective.

Artists are encouraged to submit three-dimensional work such as assemblage, sculpture, ceramics, or fabric art as well as more conventional mediums, like oil or acrylic painting, watercolor, photography, and mixed media.

There is no charge for submitting art, and the piece must be offered for sale. All work must be ready to hang or mount with professional wire and should be suitable for viewing by the general public. Artists are requested to read the complete Exhibition Guidelines available at the visitor center and on the Art in Public Places page at www.29palms.org. The gallery at Twentynine Palms Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce is open seven days a week, 73484 29 Palms Hwy. at the corner of Desert Queen Avenue, downtown Twentynine Palms, (760) 367-6197. Art in Public Places exhibitions are presented by the Public Arts Advisory Committee of the City of Twentynine Palms. Vickie Waite

Vickie is currently serving as the Public Information Officer for the City of Twentynine Palms. Ms. Waite is a long time resident of the Morongo Basin and Founding Publisher of the Sun Runner Magazine. Along with her late husband Terry Waite, Vickie was instrumental in acquiring much of the Public Art you see about town. While we do not always see eye to eye, I value her as a close friend and confidant.
