On Sunday January 5th, at 5:58 pm, firefighters responded to a reported structure fire in the 6600 block of El Rey Avenue located in the City of Twentynine Palms.
29 Palms firefighters arrived to find a single-family residence well involved in fire with flames coming from every window of the house. With bystanders reporting that someone may still be in the home, and with a 29 Palms unit already committed to another incident in the city east of Utah Trail, three 29 Palms firefighters began an aggressive offensive attack on the fire as they awaited the arrival of more fire units. Seven minutes later additional units arrived, including mutual aid units from the Combat Center and Wonder Valley, and the fire was declared under control at 6:37 pm. A careful search determined no one was in the home; however the remains of two dogs were located. An animal control officer with the City of Twentynine Palms responded to remove the remains and to take control of two other dogs located on the property.
The female resident was home at the time of the fire while the male resident was located the following morning. The investigation into the cause of the fire is being conducted by the Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb Detail. The home and contents suffered major damage with the loss estimated at $60,000. A county fire engine from Joshua Tree covered the 29 Palms district during the fire.
