SONY DSCDESERT HOT SPRINGS — Councilman Adam Sanchez eked out a 12-vote upset of incumbent Mayor Yvonne Parks to wrest the office, the Riverside County Registrar confirmed at 11:49 a.m. Saturday with unofficial final vote totals.

Parks led by 11.5 percentage points following the initial count, but Sanchez narrowed the gap with every update.

Desert Hot Springs voters ousted their first incumbent Tuesday, when Democrat Joe McKee — a familiar face on several city commissions — defeated Councilwoman Jan Pye. Mayor Pro Tem Scott Matas retained his seat.

Parks, Matas and Pye campaigned together this election. Jan Pye who had been one of the key votes for Mayor Parks to have anything rubber-stamped, told close friends that she was glad to have served her term and was actually quite relieved to be off the dais.

Desert Hot Springs will have much to overcome as Parks held back a financial report that basically states the city is in the hole with previously bad financial decisions by Rick Daniels, DHS City Manager who went to work at Needles.  It was recently revealed the Needles City Attorney is the personal attorney of Rick Daniels.  Adding more to this tale, the Financial Director hired by DHS to spur economic growth was fired and recently hired on by Needles.  Needles does not have a blog and the only newspaper they have is part of Brehm Communications who are not known for their investigative journalism so as not to lose their revenue from Legals publications.

My Desert.com reports: When a council seat is vacated within 90 days of an election, Desert Hot Springs municipal code says the seat would be filled by whoever received the next highest amount of votes. Under that scenario, Pye would be back on council to fill Sanchez’s council term, which runs through 2015. Read the story>LINK

Parks had been in the lead for most of the ballot returns as Sanchez eked his way to take the  lead by 12 votes.  Like they say, “It ain’t over until the fat lady sings.” Parties close to the DHS situation say that Parks is calling for a recall…which she will have to pay with the cost ranging from $4,000-$5,000.
