It was one of those weird days in the Mojave Desert. Only in the Great Mojave while travelling the Mother Road can you come across a huge marble Chinese Lion that just kind of appeared out of nowhere and a body that was lying on the white fog line of Route 66 that turned out not to be dead at all.
Since I was a kid, I was told that that guy laying beside the road you might come across one day might be the Christ.
While this guy was not I believe the Christ, he was the perfect example to my neighbour and I to end our 60 or so minute discussion on what was the definition of “Good Works.”
It seemed so much trash laying in the road. A bit of batting pulled from an old packing quilt to cover him from the elements. As we zoomed past I thought it a pile of rags piled next to a milk crate….. Strange. Something told me to, STOP, Turn Around, Go Back, Investigate.
Thank God we did. We rolled up on what we thought to be a body, rolled up in a nasty old rag of a thing used as a blanket. The fellow did not move. Danny my neighbor was first out of the van and walked over an pushed with his foot the body’s shoulder. It did not move he pushed again as I was getting out of the drivers seat after setting the break and turning on the emergency lights. the Fellow awoke and stared at me through some very weak and desperate eyes.
How the 25 to 30 year old fellow ended up 4 miles west of Essex with no food, no Water and no idea where he was, sleeping on the side of the Mother Road, made me scratch my head. The fellow told us he was walking from Illinois to California but had somehow lost his way. His hand was broken he had maybe 4 filthy T-shirts on his back, a pair of old cargo shorts and pair of ratty old tennis shoes. He was either delirious or 5150. Tell you the truth I could not tell.
Did I mention that the guys name was Danny too? He refused to get in the van with us. We left him 6 Bottles of water, made him drink a bottle before we left for help and made him get away from the fog line of the road. We took off towards the CalTrans Yard at Essex for help.
When we got to Essex we managed to flag down a CalTrans Crew and they quickly headed toward the west to find our strange encounter.
I trust that they did what was right and had the fellow picked up by the CHP as they told us they would do. He needed more help that he was willing to accept from us and I know he would get the proper help from Law Enforcement.
We had a mission to complete in Bullhead and on our was back he wasn’t there. If it was you Lord…… I hope I got a passing grade on that test.
On the way back, I almost ran over a lady in the middle of the old highway pushing a shopping cart 2 miles from the Cadiz cutoff outside of Chambless….. No kidding two in a row….. She turned out to be a definite 5150 but had water and food……
Two Miles east of Saltus Road we came across this beautiful ton, ton and a half solid marble statue of a Chinese lion. Have fun with the pictures…… Weird day…..
