Yucca Valley, Ca.,- After much speculation and dishonest letters to the editor by Scot McKone and his ilk stating the cost of the Recall election could exceed $100,000 or even $150,000…it is only NOW that the actual cost has been provided by the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters. Lesley Copeland, Town Clerk for the Town of Yucca Valley, confirmed she just received notification from the ROV…the cost for the Recall ballot will be $62,000. She also confirmed there are NO cost estimates or billing for the validation of the Recall signatures as falsely stated by Tom Huls tossing around a $3,240 figure out of his nose in his comment on another blog.
Ms. Copeland had not read the article written by Venturi of the San Bernardino Sentinel, “Proponents Disputing Yucca Valley Town Clerk’s Dismissal Of Council Recall,” so I provided her a copy while going over a few quotes with her in the article.
In an interview with Ron Cohen, lead proponent of the Recall movement, the Sentinel reports: Cohen said, “some of the signers determined by Copeland to not be properly registered or at addresses not recognized actually lived in newly constructed homes where previously addresses for them had not existed and were thus not recognized by the town even though they were valid. Another example he gave were signatures discarded because Copeland had deemed them to be repeat signatures from the same person when in fact they were different signatures of different individuals living at the same address.”
While the Sentinel story is filled with multiple quotes regarding Ms. Copeland, Ron Cohen stated the following in an email when I sent him a copy of this post for his comment:
“The original Sentinel article had quotes that were wrong. I never mentioned Copeland in the entire interview, it was always the ROV. The detail under each of the signatures was what the ROV reported to me as well and represented our “starting point”. I am not done with the validation process with the ROV yet. I hope to finish this week with them.”
The Sentinel interview states Copeland was making determinations or consulting with the ROV to toss out signatures. The reality is the ROV provided Copeland with their findings of signature validations, or lack thereof, and she merely reported the numbers in her Press Release. The SB Registrar of Voters was hired by the Town of Yucca Valley to validate the signatures as reported earlier on Cactus Thorns.>Story
In the story posted by the Sentinel Cohen states:
“I am working every day, from 8 to 5, going over every single unvalidated signature, making sure they are in fact unvalidated,” Cohen said. He said that he has demonstrated to the registrar’s satisfaction that many of the signatures Copeland had disqualified were in fact valid.
“I would rather not disclose at this point how many,” Cohen said. “The ROV has already admitted there are some anomalies. We won’t know how many until we’re done. We will be completed on George tomorrow [Wednesday, October 16] and then we will move on to Dr. Lombardo.”
If I were a betting man…or woman, which I am, it appears there may be a new twist to this Yucca Valley Recall story. Cohen is long on tenacity and determination to prove the signatures are sufficient to trigger a Recall of Councilmen George Huntington and Robert Lombardo. Why else would he “move on” to Lombardo?
Cohen told the Sentinel he believed it possible that Copeland’s disqualification of the recall will be overturned:
“We do not have to prove that every one of the signatures thrown out are valid,” Cohen said. “In the case of George Huntington, we need to reverse the town clerk’s finding on 197 of the signatures. In Dr. Lombardo’s case, we need to reverse the town clerk’s finding on 189 of the signatures. The recall is not over and it will not be over until the amounts of signatures that are truly unvalidated are determined.”
