Menifee, CA– On September 12, 2013, at 4:51 p.m. officers from the Menifee Police Department responded to a report of a suicidal subject at a residence in the 27500 block of Medford Way, Menifee. Officers, as well as a Riverside County Sheriff’s helicopter, arrived within minutes and located the male subject in the backyard of a residence. The subject was armed with a handgun. Officers made announcements from the helicopter and from the ground, offering assistance and instructing the subject to drop the weapon. The subject refused all attempts for a peaceful resolution. As the officers continued to instruct the subject to drop the weapon, the subject refused and pointed the weapon at the officers. At this time, an officer involved shooting occurred.
The subject died on scene and his name is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin. No officers were injured and per department policy the involved officers will be placed on paid administrative leave.
Investigators from the Menifee Police Department and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed control of the investigation. This is an active investigation, and no further details will be released at this time. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Investigator Campos at the Riverside Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit (951) 955-2777 or Investigator Plumier with the Menifee Police Department (951) 210-1000.
It has become far too easy for law enforcement to justify the taking of life under the guise of officer safety. Whether this instance was a justified will never be determined as it is the policy of District Attorneys automatically to call ALL officer involved shootings justifiable no matter how thin the evidential nexus actually is.
I’ll probably get the what for from my friends in the law enforcement community, but it seems that to many, way to many civilians are shot by law enforcement as of late. The annual average number of justifiable homicides alone is estimated to be near 400.
