Yucca Valley, Ca.- I am reminded of the true grit and determination of recall proponent, Ed Montgomery, when I think of our most busiest corner at the intersection of Hwy 62 and Hwy 247. Without fail and braving the triple digit temperatures, the message was loud and clear to all passer-bys that Montgomery was there to gather signatures for the recall petitions and nothing was going to stop him!
Having served our country during the Vietnam War pulling duty in the Army, this “Soldier of Democracy” marched to the call of 3 campaigns during these past 12 months, No on Measure U, Elect Bob Leone and gathering signatures for the Recall movement to remove two Yucca Valley Councilmen from office, George Huntington and Robert Lombardo.
There were days when Montgomery turned in hundreds of signatures of registered voters to be counted over these past 90 days. Becoming somewhat of a celebrity, he even posed for visitors from San Diego who were going to construct similar signage for their recall of the San Diego Mayor, who has since resigned.
The famous “Hammer-gate” incident when a recall opponent threaten the petition gatherers wielding a hammer is still winding through the court system. The placement of signs was finally worked out and approved with CalTrans.
There is no doubt the winds of change are coming about in Yucca Valley with the commitment of citizens like Ed Montgomery.
We owe a great deal of thanks to Citizen Ed Montgomery!
