On Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at approximately 2245 hours, deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (Hesperia station) responded to a medical aid call at the incident location. Upon arriving on scene, deputies discovered a 1 year-old child was transported to Desert Valley Hospital for difficulty breathing. Shortly after being transported to the hospital, the child was pronounced deceased. Due to suspicious circumstances surrounding the child’s death, detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Specialized Investigations Division responded to assist with the investigation. During the investigation, detectives learned the child died from blunt force trauma; while in the care of a neighborhood babysitter, Daniel Ruiz. Ruiz was questioned by detectives and was subsequently arrested for PC 187 – murder. Ruiz was booked at Central Detention Center, in San Bernardino, where he is currently being held without bail.
