On May 17, 2013, at 3:50 PM, deputies from the Thermal Sheriff’s Station responded to a reported juvenile medical aid near the 88000 block of Airport Boulevard in Thermal. Upon arrival deputies found a two-year-old child, identified as Jorge Lizarraga, suffering from unexplained injuries. Jorge was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy and listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma.
Investigators from the Riverside Sheriff’s Thermal Station as well and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed control of the investigation. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma.
On May 26, 2013, at about 2:00 AM, detectives from the Central Homicide Unit received information that Daniel Valenzuela, age 24 of Thermal, and a person of interest in this case, was at the border crossing in Calexico. Detectives responded to the Calexico border crossing and detained Valenzuela. Valenzuela was transported to the Thermal Sheriff Station for further investigation. Based upon the investigation, Valenzuela was arrested for homicide.
