Arrests Made in 1991 Needles Murder Case

seven-psychopaths-2012-002-marty-billy-in-joshua-tree-desertOn September 16, 1991 at about 10:00 a.m., a passing motorist saw a vehicle stopped in the desert about 100 feet south of Interstate 40, at the US 95 off-ramp. Scott Sprague, 35 of Santa Cruz, Ca, was found deceased from multiple gunshot wounds, in the driver’s seat of his vehicle.

In November of 2012, the Sheriff’s Homicide Cold Case Team reopened the 1991 investigation.

On February 20, 2013, the Cold Case Team traveled to Orlando, Florida, and interviewed Jeffrey Allen Campbell 49, (then 28). After further investigation, Investigators obtained arrest warrants for Campbell and Richard Eric Williamson 54, (then 54). Campbell was arrested by Orlando Police Officers was extradited to San Bernardino on March 10, 2013.

On April 30, 2013, the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division, in cooperation with the US Marshal’s Office located and arrested Richard Williamson in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The District Attorney’s Office filed murder charges against Campbell and Williamson. Williamson is awaiting extradition from Nevada.

The Sheriff’s Cold Case Team is funded in part through a $500,000 “Solving Cold Cases with DNA Grant” from the US Department of Justice. The Cold Case Team consists of two Homicide Detectives and a Deputy District Attorney.
