On Sunday, March 3, 2013, several Girl Scouts from Troop 1303 had been selling Girl Scout cookies all day in front of the Stater Bros Supermarket in Phelan. At approximately 6:50 P.M. the girls began packing up their supplies to go home for the evening. The bag containing money from all sales for the day was set on a table. A white male subject walked up to the table, took the bag, and ran. One of the Girl Scouts ran after him, but fell causing minor scrapes and scratches.
Video surveillance of the subject entering the store was obtained and placed into evidence. The amount of money taken was undisclosed.
On Monday, March 4, 2013, after surveillance footage was released and broadcast, the suspect in the theft of cash from a local Girl Scout Troop was identified as Colin Sawyer, 20 years old. At 7:20 p.m. Deputies Kowalski and Downey observed the suspect, Colin Sawyer at a gas station near Phelan Rd. and Baldy Mesa and took him into custody without incident.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with additional information is urged to contact Detective Jeff Toll at (760)868-1006.
