Firefighting News: FDNY Firefighters Restrain Cleaver-Wielding Man

_51997910_butchercleaver624You would think there would a call for the registration of meat cleavers was heard from the halls of Congress this morning. Or an edict from the desk of Mayor Bloomberg reducing the size of a butcher knife to 6 inches in total.

Two firefighters intervened in a violent domestic dispute in New York City’s Chinatown neighborhood on Sunday.

The New York Post reported (LINK) that Fire Department of New York Firefighters Jose Ortiz and James Trainor said they heard a couple screaming at each other and tussling around 10:24 a.m. While working on the rigs, the firefighters saw a man dragging a woman down the street. The woman was screaming and crying; the man bore a meat cleaver and began hacking at the woman.

The firefighters approached the suspect and restrained him until police arrived on scene. A third firefighter, Shane Clarke, went to assist the female, who fled the scene. The woman was listed in critical condition last night at Bellevue Hospital but is expected to survive.
