Yucca Valley, Ca.- This evening’s Town Council Forum was a great success due to the Yucca Valley Chamber Director, Cheryl Nankervis, keeping everything running smooth. Planning to retire in June 2014, this could very well be her last Candidate Forum of her career, and it was a good one.
Blank postcards were given out with pens to the arriving citizens to submit their questions to the three candidates running for one seat. There were approximately 64 citizens in attendance including six Staff members, two council men, two planning commissioners and two HDWD directors. The Forum started promptly at 6:00pm, called to order by Jim Lawless, the President-elect of the Chamber, and ended promptly at 7:30pm, as advertised. Jim did a great job as the moderator and remained very organized throughout this Forum.
The questions covered a wide range of topics and the three candidates agreed on the priority of the sewer. The questions were supposed to be designed so each candidate would be capable of answering, however, a technical planning commission question slipped through the cracks. The question was easily handled by Candidate/Planning Commissioner Michael Hildebrand, a contractor, and Candidate Past Mayor Bob Leone who was on the Planning Commission previously. Candidate Jennifer Collins was caught off guard since it was not her field of expertise, and unfortunately tried to answer the question when she should have declined to answer.
It was evident that experience and knowledge were brought to the table by Hildebrand and Leone as each spoke without note cards or prepared speeches and answered the questions with depth.
The Forum will aired on Channel 10, cable TV on Saturday beginning February 9th, 16th, 23rd and on March 2, 2013. If anyone is undecided on Saturday, March 2, 2013, it will be necessary to bring your ballot to the Yucca Valley Town Hall on March 4th or Tuesday, March 5th because it will not arrive in time to the Registrar of Voters.
