San Bernardino County Fire Department plans to meet with Baldwin Lake residents and property owners regarding fire service. A meeting is planned for Feb. 15.

The rural community in the unincorporated area of Big Bear Valley is served by County Fire out of Fawnskin. A volunteer fire company, Baldwin Lake Fire Department, also serves the area under the umbrella of the county in some operational aspects.

Larry Winslow, chief of the Baldwin Lake Fire Department volunteer company, wants to form his own fire protection district. He has funded the volunteer company personally and through donations since its inception several years ago. He told The Grizzly that the idea to form a separate fire protection district is due to the fact that property tax dollars paid by Baldwin Lake property owners are sent to support the Fawnskin station. He wants to change that.

Efforts to enhance service with the County Fire Department have been unsuccessful, Winslow has said. He said the county wants to change staffing and charge more, eliminating his 24/7 staffingwith volunteers.
