Hoyer was being held without bail for attempted murder of a family friend at his home this summer.

On Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 3:59 p.m. deputies at the Morongo Basin jail found inmate Karl Hoyer hanging in his cell. Deputies immediately began CPR and Hoyer was transported to High Desert Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Investigators determined that Hoyer was alone in his cell when he was found hanging with a bed sheet tied around his neck. Hoyer had been in custody since April 21, 2012 on attempt murder charges, and was in Morongo Basin jail for a recent court hearing.

Coroner Case 701300404 – At 3:09 PM on 01/13/13, Karl Hoyer, a 48 year old resident of Twentynine Palms, was found hanging in his jail cell. He was transported to the Hi Desert Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:45 PM. The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Homicide Division is investigating the in-custody death.
