TWENTYNINE PALMS — Maj. Gen. David H. Berger next month will become the new commander of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.
The change of command ceremony is slated for 2 p.m. Jan. 11 at the base’s Lance Cpl. Torrey L. Gray Field.
Berger last served as the commanding general of 1st Marine Division (Forward) in Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, according to officials at the Twentynine Palms base. Berger was responsible for the day-to-day ground combat operations across Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.
Since July 2011, the Twentynine Palms base has been under the command of Brig. Gen. George W. Smith, Jr.
Smith will be deployed to Afghanistan in January.
