During his brief tenure as commander of the Desert Training Center in 1942, George S. Patton refined his principles of war, which were actually lessons for living.

A Military Memories Art Show will open with a reception on Friday, Nov. 2, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Twentynine Palms Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce building at 73484 29 Palms Hwy. in downtown Twentynine Palms. The public is invited to attend and view the artwork, listen to music, and enjoy refreshments provided by the reception sponsors, the Officers Spouses Club of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC).

The show is the last in a series of Art in Public Places themed exhibitions for the year, and is scheduled to be on display from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, 2012.

Active duty and retired military, veterans, families and friends were invited to transform their military memories into art and submit their work for possible inclusion in this group show. The resulting art exhibition aims to reinforce the bond between civilian and military residents of Twentynine Palms, MCAGCC, and the Morongo Basin, and to honor those who have served and are serving our country.

The two-month show is also designed to provide a public art venue for military artists who have not previously had an opportunity to show their work in the local community. Art mediums include watercolors, paintings, drawings, digital art, mixed media, collage, photography, assemblage, and sculpture.

Art in Public Places exhibitions are presented by the Public Arts Advisory Committee (PAAC) of the City of Twentynine Palms.  For more information, contact Jon Beard at (760) 367-7562 or email publicarts@29palms.org.

The Twentynine Palms Visitor Center and Gallery and Chamber of Commerce is located at the corner of the highway and Desert Queen Avenue downtown Twentynine Palms, (760) 367-6719. The visitor center is open 9-5 Monday through Friday and 10-4 Saturday and Sunday.
