Yeah I will be speaking to you today about Pioneer Days. I am going to be gently inserting the probe on this subject.

After this weekend I’ve decided that we are going to work with others to save Pioneer Days as a historic Institution representing everything good and decent about 29 Palms…. We have to Join the Chamber and put things right. So got the application and going down today and drop off our money.

Timing is everything

……. Lets think about planning events around Government Paydays…… Never… let me repeat NEVER schedule an event when the town is Broke…. never between paydays.

Leadership

Don’t take the job unless you are willing to put all your energy into that job it deserves. You can not have competing loves. You can not give sufficient affection to neither to give either what the deserve.

Location Location Location

….. It’s time we think about returning the events back to their historic Locations. While Lucky park is a nice place it does not affect the reason of the celebration. We are celebrating almost 100 years of Commerce and Community. Lets make this a reason for us to spend money in town as well as on the midway.

Honest Dealings

….. Lets stop selling every vendor on the belief that they are going to be the exclusive widget sales booth only to find that 4 others are selling the same widgets. It burns bridges and leaves vendors with hard feelings. If vendors do not make money they will not come back. Price the event to reflect the true value of the event. If a guy is going to pay $50.00 a day you better Guarantee that vendor 5000 people are passing by his booth.

Communications

….. Let people know well in advance that the event is going to happen. Build up the momentum by increasing the advertising as the time approaches. Do not divide your loyalties. We need to do one event at a time. Doing more than one event at a time means both events suffer. Do not put all your eggs into one basket.

Community Spirit

….. The whole idea of Pioneer Days is to celebrate community. Lets let the community get involved. Open discussion. Be receptive to new ideas…. allow others to assume responsibility. Allow others to think outside the box. Join with churches, and other service groups and let them take the lead. Lets really make this a Community Event again.
