Yucca Mesa Association Hosts Measure U Tax Forum/Sacramento Sends BOE Representative

Yucca Mesa, Ca.-The public is invited to the October potluck gathering this evening, October 26, 2012, at the Yucca Mesa Improvement Association Community Center  located at 3133 Balsa Avenue, Yucca Valley. Ca. The Halloween themed potluck starts at 6pm and attendees are asked to bring a dish to share for 6-8 persons, their own plates and utensils.  Drinks and dessert will be provided.

At  7PM, citizens from both Measure U committees will present Pros and Cons in a balanced presentation of this tax measure in a timed debate. Measure U is a 30 year-1% General Fund Tax placed on the ballot by the Town of Yucca Valley.

The Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce formed a Citizen’s Committee to promote YES on Measure U.  The Morongo Basin Property Association formed a Citizen’s Committee of property owners to urge a NO vote on Measure U. Each side will make a case for their point of view in an old fashion debate of the issue at this Forum.

Trist Gonzalez, representing the State Board of Equalization will be participating in the program. She will discuss the Use Tax implications for the residents of Yucca Mesa and Flamingo Heights who share the same Yucca Valley zip code of 92284. The residents of Yucca Mesa live in the county, not within the town boundary and cannot vote on the tax. Ms. Gonzalez will be flying in from Sacramento to answer questions regarding tax implications but will not weigh in on Measure U.

The Rules and Debate Guidelines for this Forum were sent to each Citizen Committee as follows:

“We will introduce all our guest speakers and we will toss a coin to decide who will speak first. Each group For or Against Measure U will be allowed to speak 5-7 minutes. This will be timed. Once both sides have spoken the State Board of Equalization will speak for 5-10 minutes as to how this tax measure will be managed if pass.

The Speakers for the Pro’s or Con’s will be allow to speak for another 2 minutes following the State Board of Equalization Presentation. This will also be timed.

Following the presentation we will allow individuals to ask questions following the event.”

In addition to the citizens from Yucca Mesa and Flamingo Heights, several residents from Yucca Valley will be attending the only Forum in the Morongo Basin presenting both sides of the Measure U tax issue. Please plan to arrive early to secure seating because the maximum seating at the YMIA Community Center is 100 guests.
