Roll Cage held up, seatbelts not so much

Mohave County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a single vehicle rollover accident on Centennial Road early Friday (10/19) evening. At about 6:05 p.m., MCSO dispatch received a 911 call reporting a one vehicle roll over crash on Centennial Road.

Deputies and Golden Valley Fire Department personnel responded, locating the crash a little more than a mile south of the prison. A preliminary investigation revealed that the 1970 dune buggy was being operated by Frank Ellis Stringer, 53, with Ronnie Ray Birdsell, 54, as a passenger, both of Golden Valley. The two were traveling north on Centennial Road when they encountered a washed out section of the road. Stringer was unable to slow the vehicle prior to hitting the rough section of the road and the dune buggy rolled.

Stringer was partially ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene. Birdsell was fully ejected during the crash and was transported to Kingman Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Neither of the two occupants were wearing the installed safety belts. The investigation is on going and speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors.

This particular section of Centennial Road has never been accepted into the Mohave County Road system and therefore is not a maintained roadway.

You are right Dan, the seatbelts didn’t work too well — I guess that’s what happens when they are left unfastened as the report mentions.

A terrible loss for the decedents loved-ones and a shame that Cook’s, “freedom-robbing” seatbelt law is not in effect yet.

“…a shame that Cook’s, “freedom-robbing” seatbelt law is not in effect yet.”

The “shame” Scott, is that you don’t get it

    Click it or ticket!
Get caught driving drunk and go to jail!

Do you really think someone ignoring the law against driving drunk would give a rat’s ass about a seatbelt law?

Law or no law, seatbelts save lives. Everyone knows it and off-roaders are the true believers. But if two grown men want to take their chances without hurting anyone else, how is that any of your damned business?

Besides, the big issue with Cook is requiring helmets in vehicles that already have rollover protection. I guess that’s safer ok, but wearing helmets in your family sedan would be safer too so is that where you want your nanny state to go next?

Idiots willing to give up everyone’s freedom as easily as you and Cook, PISS ME OFF !!!

after many years of off roading and off road racing I shake my head with sympathy for them. If they would have just protected themselves correctly with a correct roll cage and a 5 point harness that person would nave been UN hurt. Is it stupidity or finances I cant tell but we don’t need more ruled regs and laws. God loves stupid people, he made a whole bunch of them.
