The Truth about the Yucca Valley 1% Town Tax
Tomorrow, August 7th, the Town Council will vote to put their 1% sales tax on the November ballot.
Here is the truth about this sales tax:
1. It is a 30 year general fund tax that should generate over $90 million dollars according to the town staff report.
2. This general fund tax only needs 50% plus one vote to pass.
3. This tax will NOT be shared equally with the Hi-Desert Water District to pay for the mandated sewers.
4. It is NOT legal to earmark, designate or lock-box any general fund taxes towards the sewer project.
5. The 1% Town Sales Tax will NOT lower the property owner’s sewer assessment on their parcel.
6. Any agreement(s) between the Town and Hi-Desert Water District regarding this general fund tax is NOT enforceable by law.
7. Future YV Town Council members may decide to fund other projects on an annual basis instead of sewers without any penalty or restrictions.
8. The Regional Water Board will NOT accept this general fund tax as funding for any State loans.
9. The Town is piggybacking off the State mandated sewers to grab all the tax revenue to go directly into their general fund.
Past presentations by Yucca Valley Town Manager, Mark Nuaimi, promoting to use this tax revenue towards sewers to lower the citizen’s individual costs was an attempt to mislead and confuse the public. Tomorrow he is going to ask for additional public funds in the amount of $20,000 to “educate” promote the town tax and $6,000 to cover “Town Clerk-Election expenses.”
Nuaimi has always known a General Fund Tax cannot be designated and has wasted our tax dollars to promote a “partnership” with the Hi-Desert Water District. Looks like Nuaimi was jerking the HDWD Board of Directors too!
A. Defeat this Town Tax money grab this November.
B. Place a Citizen’s Initiative for all the sales tax to fund the mandated sewer on the next election cycle to Save Yucca Valley. Assisting all citizens, restaurants, hotels, businesses and even the Town of Yucca Valley buildings in Phase One of the sewer project.
C. Demand an end to Yucca Valley Town Council appointments! Let the citizens vote for an elected leader on the next election cycle in March.
D. If there is no Citizen’s Initiative to fund the sewer costs, vote no for the sewer assessments!
