Cabazon Snatch and Grab Solved

On Saturday, March 06, 2010, deputies from the Cabazon Sheriff’s Station responded to the Outlet Malls located at 48650 Seminole in the unincorporated area of Riverside County known as Cabazon reference a strong arm robbery.

Upon arrival deputies learned one suspect approached two female shoppers and asked for some change. As one of the shoppers went to retrieve change from her purse the suspect grabbed her purse and fled to an awaiting vehicle. A second suspect acted as a getaway driver during the incident and both suspects fled the area prior to our arrival. Deputies searched the area and did not locate the suspects.

The first suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his early 20’s approximately 5’08” in height, 200-230 lbs, wearing dark-colored pants and a burgundy shirt.

The vehicle was described as a newer German-make vehicle, possibly a Volkswagen Jetta, silver or grey in color. This investigation is ongoing.

James Joon Kim, 18

On 3/09/10, investigators assigned to the Cabazon Station developed information leading them to believe suspects in the robbery, may reside in Los Angeles County. In coordination with the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, investigators identified one of the three suspects as James Joon Kim, 18 years old of La Crescenta. Additional information led to the location of Kim who was in custody at the time in Los Angeles County on unrelated charges.

Kim was subsequently taken into custody by Cabazon investigators at the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Pasadena, transported to Riverside County, and booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility on felony charges related to Robbery, Conspiracy, Receiving Stolen Property and Burglary where he is being held in lieu of $25,000.00 bail. With the assistance of the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, investigators were able to locate and recovery jewelry valued at $20,000 which was taken during the robbery.

On 03/11/10, investigators from the Cabazon Station obtained and served search warrants at three separate locations in the La Crescenta area of Los Angeles County. With the assistance of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, members of the multi-agency San Gorgonio Special Operations Gang Task Force and members of the multi-agency Allied Riverside County Narcotics Enforcement Team, Cabazon Station investigators located Ji Min Park, 18 years old of La Crescenta and arrested him in connection with the robbery.

Park was subsequently transported to Riverside County where he was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility on felony charges related to Robbery, Conspiracy, Receiving Stolen Property and Burglary where he is being held in lieu of $25,000.00 bail. During the continuing investigation, investigators located additional jewelry valued at $20,000.00 that was likewise taken during the robbery. The jewelry located on both dates, with a total value of $40,000 represents nearly all of the property taken during the robbery.

A third suspect identified as John Kang, also 18 years old of La Crescenta, remains at large. A felony warrant has been issued for his arrest for the same charges of Robbery, Conspiracy, Receiving Stolen Property and Burglary. The investigation is continuing.
