Happy Fathers Day

Sonora Dodd, of Washington, first had the idea of a “father’s day.” She thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909.

Sonora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state.

After Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father’s Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law which finally made it permanent in 1972.

Came to the office at 8:am today and the Farmer’s Market was all set up and ready to go. I’d recommended they change their hours due to the heat in the summer. Melanie, let us know if attendance improved.

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there…..and Larry, attendance was slow until about 0900 at which time we had a burst. Slowed down again and then another burst about 1200. The market decided to remain open until 1300 but it had slowed down again by then. The heat was tolerable but by 1300 it had started to get uncomfortable.

Attendance seems to improve every week as more people learn about the market and make the decision to come see what is available. I think and hope that it will become as good as the one in Joshua Tree, but know that it will take time. I don’t remember JT becoming a HUGE success overnight and feel that 29 will just continue to grow.

    Again, Happy Father’s Day!!

Just got a call from a friend saying she heard on Z107.7 that Lori Herbelhas cancelled the 29 Palms Farmer’s Market.

      Hi Larry,

Another failed small business venture due to no ones fault other than the economy.

As you fully well know I was one of the supporters for the concept when on the council for a Farmer’s Market.

I am still a supporter of a Farmer’s Market but I will not and can not support a Market that discriminates against a Veteran that served in Vietnam simly because that person had a personal problem with that Veteran.

Just can’t do that no matter what people may have to say.
