Freedom does not mean……

Let’s not confuse a personal preference with a personal right.

Some people think that freedom means that they have the right to be free from being offended.

The 1st amendment prohibits the Congress from making laws abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. The Supreme Court has ruled that it also applies to State and Local Legislatures through the 14th Amendment.

You’ll notice it says nothing about you being able to be free from anyone availing themselves of those rights. I suppose the only way you could be free of those rights or not have to deal with folks talking, writing or associating is to live on a desert island or be dead.

Opinions are like… well you know the old adage… and most peoples opinions stink if you happen to disagree. Most times I think Kelly O’Sullivan’s editorials are drivel and a waste of fish wrapper. But to get all pissy and say she should be banned from the paper or that I’m not going to read the Desert Trail because I don’t agree with her? Her freedom of speech is in my opinion in inviolable. I do not have the right to silence her. Now I can offer a counterpoint and hope that my opinion sways more people than her opinion, but that is the extent of it. By the way, just because I don’t agree with Kelly on many issues, I will defend her right to say them as I believe she would defend mine. That is what it is all about being an American.

I compromise everyday with those who write that I disagree with. I let them.

Some people think that freedom means that they have the right to be free from being disturbed.

I’m at a complete loss to find that in the Constitution.

Life is 80 years of boredom punctuated by a series of disturbances. Now you can make every disturbance a reason to bear a cross or you can put each distraction into perspective.

All of us have to put of with our neighbors. Everything that you consider a personal nuisance is not a public nuisance.

Because your neighbor paints his home Giant Dwarf Orange and you think everyone should have a Navajo White house, does not make his house a Public Nuisance. It might drive you up a wall, but you need to knock off the OCD schist and get a life, Rain-man.

You have the expectation of reasonable privacy. But privacy has nothing to do with your “View-scape” or your expectation of peace and quiet. Peace and Quiet are relative and subjective terms that have Jack shit to do with your privacy.
